The Link: July 2017

From Reverend Sandi Dillon

Every year, usually in May or June, United Methodists around the world gather together in their areas at meetings called "conferences". For the Rocky Mountain Annual Conference, our 2017 meeting was held June 15-19th at the Denver Tech Center Marriott. The business of the annual conference is to attend to legislation that affects the General Church and the Annual Conference, to vote on ministry candidates and officially read the appointments for the year, to remember those who passed during the past year at a memorial service, to offer training and luncheons and presentations and awards. And truthfully, much of it leaves you in tears (of boredom).

But this year I teared up for other reasons. Like reconnecting with a family from my first pastoral appointment in Central City, and hugging them and talking to them like 8 years hadn't passed. Or sitting with a layperson from Grace in Cheyenne, where I used to serve, and crying over the passing of her daughter this past December. Or watching two beautiful women named Vette and Leah, both of whom I supervised as ministry interns in Wyoming, be commissioned as provisional elders in the UMC. Or watching our new Bishop sing and dance in the Spirit, calling all of us to create Beloved Community and to stand in unity with our brothers, sisters and siblings in Christ. These moments were precious gifts, and I left the 2017 Annual Conference session with much more hope about our denomination than going in.

Another moment of hope was seeing Rev. Jamielee Demske be blessed by the Bishop as a licensed local pastor, and hearing her name read as the new Associate Pastor of Wash Park UMC!  I am so looking forward to a new chapter and new life in ministry in Wash Park with Jamielee.  Her appointment begins with us July 1st, but make sure you join us on Sunday, July 9th for her Installation during worship and a Welcome BBQ after church!

Annual Conference reminded me that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves, and renewed my hope in God's people, the church.

Peace,

Happy Summer from WPUMC's Preschool

The summer has been a big HIT so far! The kids have been busy learning all about science, insects that live that the Butterfly Pavilion, animals that live at the Denver Zoo, meeting pirates and princesses, playing in water and having picnics. The fun continues in July with sports gear week with special sport visitors, a dinosaur and Denver Museum visit, more water days and a visit from the Denver Aquarium, and learning all about art and music from our art and music teacher Ms. Dez.

Fall 2017/2018 School Year

We still some availability in our Pre-K and Junior Kindergarten classes for the 2016/2017 school year. Help us spread the word about our great school by referring any one you might know to come and take a tour of our wonderful school. Our 4th annual Fall Fundraiser is approaching fast. This fun, community-building event includes live music, excellent food, and a silent auction. If you have any items that you would like to donate for our auction, please contact Jessica at [email protected]. Watch for more information and invitations coming soon.
"Welcome Jamielee" BBQ on July 9

Join us in welcoming Jamielee on  Sunday, July 9 with a BBQ following worship service in the courtyard. This BBQ will be a potluck. The church will provide a main meat dish, but we are looking for others to bring side dishes. Please sign up HERE with what you will bring.

Missions

Morning has Broken
Rev. Daniel Marutle (back row, center in the photo above) is a longtime member of our church. For many years, we've supported his annual trip to South Africa where he provides training and spiritual support to the caregivers at the Morning Has Broken/Kwaze-Kwasa orphanage for children of AIDS/HIV victims.

As a church, we have a goal to raise $6,000 for Daniel's on-going mission work. If you would like to make a donation to this very worthy cause, you can make checks payable to WPUMC with "Morning has Broken" in the memo. Deadline for donations is  Monday, July 17 . We will present Daniel with the donation on  Sunday, July 23

Swinging @ AIDS
Annually, WPUMC sponsors a hole at the Swinging @ AIDS Charity Golf Tournament. This event raises awareness and money for AIDS treatment for women and children in rural India and those in need in Colorado. The golf tournament is  Wednesday, August 16 at City Park Golf Course in Denver.

If you would like to help sponsor this hole, you can write a check to WPUMC with "Swinging@aids" in the memo line. Deadline is  July 30
Trustees Report: New Roof

WPUMC has a new roof on the original building. We hired Dillon and Dillon Quality Roofing. They were able to get the new roof on  within one week ! This is a great improvement for the upkeep of our building. We were even so lucky to get part of the payment paid for by our District Conference Office as part of our yearly payments.
Lunch Bunch
Lunch Bunch: July 22

Join us on Saturday, July 22  from  10:30 am - 1:30  pm for Park Kids/Lunch Bunch/Club 456.

Lunch Bunch is for kids age 3 (and potty trained) through 6th grade. Pack a lunch and water bottle. Prepare to get wet--we will have water games!

Please RSVP to  [email protected] . I could also use an adult volunteer if anyone is able to attend for all or part of the time.
