SCHOOL YEAR END FESTIVAL FUN!

With the school year winding down, Vanderheyden's Student Council hosted a year-end festival for our students on our Wynantskill campus on Tuesday, June 20th.

The day was filled with lots of fun, activities, and a BBQ for all to enjoy!

OUR MULTI-TALENTED VICTORIA!

"What Vanderheyden does for us, I want to do for other kids."

Who says the arts and sports don't mix?

Victoria proves that wrong, as she excels in both fields.

The Manhattan native, who hails from Washington Heights, has been at Vanderheyden for ten months.

Victoria started as a guard and small forward this past season on Vanderheyden's Varsity Basketball Team.

Did we mention she was the only female on the team?

Agazou "Aggie" Sanon, Victoria's basketball coach says she was a fierce competitor, and being the only girl, she was "tested," but she never gave up.

"She always made sure she kept her head up, and just kept competing with the boys," Sanon says. "She wanted to show everybody that she can do it. That she's not a quitter."

"Vickie was a hard worker, really a hard worker. She pushed her teammates," Sanon says. "She was a leader, and we needed that at times."

Sanon says Victoria took to heart and embodied what he preached to the team about being a family.

"I think she showed that, and the kids respected her a lot," Sanon says. "They looked up to her, so she was a very important key to this team."

Victoria was also a part of a Vanderheyden group of basketball players who went to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts in March. The trip was donated by a generous patron at our Spring Fundraiser.

"It was so inspiring what you can be," Victoria says.

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors fan says she enjoyed seeing how basketball really started, and what sneakers (Converse) and the "too tight" uniforms the players wore years ago.

Besides sports, Victoria loves photography, and is extremely impressive as she naturally "edits" her way around Photoshop cs6.

Victoria says she learned Photoshop on her own, and can do any editing task that is presented to her. She also has edited photos for the school yearbook from Vanderheyden's Royal Gala, Graduation, and senior trips.

After high school, Victoria plans to go to a two-year college to study Criminal Justice, and then work with children.

Victoria likes the support she gets from Vanderheyden's Team Members.

"They are always there for me," she says. "If I don't know something, or need help, they are there."

"The staff is supportive. They understand us. They understand what we are going through," Victoria says.

She also has praise for the Richard A. Desrochers Educational Center at our Wynantskill campus.

"I like the way the school is set up, and the classes and teachers" Victoria says. "If we don't understand something, they help us. They make sure we learn."

In her spare time, Victoria also likes to paint, listen to music, and helps out in her cottage by doing chores.

We see an impressive, bright future for this talented young lady.

Good luck, Victoria with your future endeavors!

DEVON AND BRITTANY INTRODUCE
        OUR NEWEST PROGRAM

Vanderheyden introduced a new program to the public that simplifies communication between all of an individual's caregivers, in order to effectively address all of the individual's needs.

We know that caring for a child can be a complicated and often exhausting experience, so Vanderheyden has teamed together with other children's organizations to provide Care Management Services in our Children's Health Home program.

Children from birth to age 21 who are enrolled in Medicaid, and have other chronic health conditions or a qualifying diagnoses, are eligible to participate.

Devon Capparella has been Care Manager Supervisor for the new case management and care coordination program since its start six months ago.

Capparella, from Rensselaer County, started at Vanderheyden five years ago as an intern, while she pursued her MSW at SUNY Albany. She also worked as a Direct Care Worker for a year on our campus, and became a Case Coordinator at Vanderheyden's Supervised Independent Living Program (SILP).

Capparella says Health Home Care Management is a program she strongly believes in. She was very excited that Vanderheyden was launching it, after hearing the talk about it, and sitting in on webinars.

"It brings services to a lot more children, and, it also offers the continuity of care," she says.

Capparella says the five-month old program "is growing, and, there are noticeable results."

Brittany Piccolo, a Health Home Care Manager, has been with the program since January. She's a graduate of SUNY Oneonta, and received her master's degree at Chatham University in Pennsylvania.

She said she originally heard about the Home Health program concept from a fellow student at college, and fell in love with the idea. Piccolo found Vanderheyden after searching the web for similar programs.

"I saw the opportunity to work here at Vanderheyden with children, and thought this would be a perfect fit," Piccolo says. "I love the Health Home idea, and the atmosphere at Vanderheyden. The staff was welcoming and supportive."

Piccolo says there are many parts of the program she likes.

"There is a focus on overall health. Mental health, physical health needs, social needs, recreational, educational, peer interaction. Not one specific thing," she says. "The program also looks at the family as a unit."

Piccolo says this is so beneficial to the clients the program serves.

"The scope of some human services jobs are very limited, and this job reduces barriers," she says. "I can do much more with clients."

Piccolo has already seen many successes due to the program, and says it is very motivating to see.

In one case, Piccolo helped a 13-year-old young man and his family, who were homeless, move into a new apartment. "That's exciting to see," she says.

Piccolo also helped a 14-year-old young man who was not in school for two months, re-enroll in high school.

Her work also includes helping the parents.

"I work with the parent to set guidelines. I try to help the parent out with what they need," Piccolo says. "I find and utilize resources to better support their children."

Services offered include referrals to support groups and family counseling. She also educates parents on community resources, such as having assistance, emergency services, and mental health counseling.

In her spare time, Piccolo, a Schoharie County native, loves to paint. Creating landscapes and still life with oils are her favorites. She also loves to hike and go on nature walks.

Capparella loves to go to the beach, and plans a trip to Cape Cod at least once a year. Cooking from scratch "is a form of therapy," she says.

Vanderheyden's Home Health Care Management Program services these areas:
Albany, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga, Greene, Columbia, Warren, Washington and Ulster Counties.

EMPOWERING WOMEN TO LEAD

Our President and CEO Karen Carpenter Palumbo was the Moderator of a Panel Discussion
on June 15th, called "Women to Lead in Equal Numbers" at the Rotunda at Albany's City Hall.

The Center for Women in Government and Civil Society, and the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy sponsored the event, which highlighted the importance of women's leadership in public service, and to encourage more women to engage in public service as a career.

Lieutenant Governor Kathleen Hochul presented opening remarks. Members of the panel included New York State Deputy Comptroller Angela Dixon, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan, Albany Common Council President Carolyn McLaughlin, and Rensselaer County Executive Kathy Jimino.
