Christmas in July

Dear Members and Friends of Maple Grove,

It's CHRISTMAS IN JULY!  We will support ministries here at church, in our community, and around the world.  And because of previous years' generosity, we can lower the goal and still do more ministry.  This year's goal is $7000 . (In the past we raised over $15,000.)

Administrative Council has chosen these important projects for Christmas in July 2017:

  • Maple Grove's Thanksgiving Day Meal Last year 170 meals were served in Fellowship Hall and a hundred more got delivered to homes and homeless shelters.
  • Bethlehem on Broad Every year Maple Grove packs 140 food boxes to share with hungry families.
  • The Bishop Judith Craig Children's Village in Liberia, Africa.  Pastor Glenn visited this orphanage last year and the director, Rev. Robert Sieh and wife Margretta, just visited Maple Grove.  We want to help them get a van to transport children for medical and educational purposes.
  • Community Refugee & Immigration Services helps refugees and immigrants reach self-sufficiency and achieve successful integration into the central Ohio community.  This project is both global and local!
During "Christmas in July" we will sing carols, eat Christmas cookies, meet Santa, and learn how we can change lives in Africa and down the street. Meeting the $7000 goal will cause it to SNOW inside our sanctuary-maybe even on the pastor! Stay tuned . . .

Here are three easy ways to give:
  • Cash or check (to "Maple Grove," memo: "Christmas in July").
  • Text donations to 614-980-0790--in the message type: $, the amount you want to give, space, cij (for example:  $100 CIJ).
  • Online here and choose Christmas in July.

Your giving means a happy Thanksgiving for neighbors, meals for hungry families, a hearty welcome to newcomers, and lives touched in Africa. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

In Christ,

Rev. Glenn Schwerdtfeger, Pastor                                      Cathy Davis, Assistant Minister

3.   After dinner we'll go to Trapped Columbus for an hour-long interactive theater specializing in escape games - Trapped is located across the street from MG.  We'll either solve a heist on a yacht, resolve a sabotaged spaceship on a mission to mars, or possibly encounter zombies in a cabin in the woods!

Summer Lunch & Learn Series
July 31 & August 13, 11:15 AM  1:30 PM
Fellowship Hall

What is our Purpose?
The summer Lunch and Learn Series will challenges each of us to reflect on our own personal mission statement and on a credo for Maple Grove.

July and August - Credo Workshops
CREDO will be a series of two summer "Lunch and Learn" events.  As Christians and as people of Maple Grove, it is often easier for us to state what we DON'T believe and what we DON'T like about religion than it is for us to state what we DO believe and what our values ARE.  Under the gentle guidance of Don Ackerman, we will focus not on what may divide us, but on what binds us together.  Let's discover and name the values and commitments that are at the heart of Maple Grove.

Don Ackerman is active duty military, teaches at Capital University, and is a seminary student and candidate for ministry in East Ohio Conference.  Don and his wife, Erin, have two young sons, James and Luke.

One Service in August

At a recent meeting of the Staff Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), the possibility of having one service in August was discussed. This will be a trial run for having one service in the summer of 2018.  The schedule for August will be:

            August 6         10:00 AM
            August 13       10:00 AM
            August 20       10:00 AM
August 27         8:30 AM   Feed the World Sunday begins at 10 AM

We hope you will join us in August so we can all worship together!  In the fall, SPRC will send a survey to assess your feedback on having one service. Please plan  attend in August so you are better able to complete our survey! We will also look at the attendance numbers and decide whether to have one service in the summer of 2018, June-August.  Please feel free to contact Lynne Matthaes, SPRC Chair,  if you have questions or concerns.
