The Consulate of Belize in Florida continues to offer Belizean Passports and Emergency Travel Documents, and it is also issuing Identification Cards, facilitating many Belizeans living in Florida with the opportunity to hold an official ID from Belize. Acceptance of these cards at U.S. offices and other institutions, however, depends on their discretion.

See and Taste Belize Fundraiser Makes Channel 7 News!
 
And Belizeans living in Belize and abroad can make the best out of this direct flight in October. The 2nd annual See and Taste Belize will be held in Miami Florida on October 7th at the Deauville Resort in Miami Beach. We are hosting our 2nd annual See and taste Belize on October 7th which coincides with carnival. The first event was an astounding success, we had close to a thousand Belizean that came to the first event from all over the United States to celebrate Belize. The concept of See and Taste Belize is really to showcase Belize's culture through its food, its art and its music. Beliken Beer and the best of Belize's rum will be available. We are very excited to have South West flights available through Ft. Lauderdale because it will give Belizeans another option to fly home. We encourage folks in Belize to join us once again to See & Taste Belize and they should start by booking their flights now on South West.

Catholic Bishop Appointed in Belize
Most Rev. Lawrence Sydney Nicasio
The Belize's second Garifuna Catholic Bishop of the Belize Diocese, the Most Reverend Lawrence Sydney Nicasio, was ordained Bishop in a concelebrated mass at the St. John's College gym in Belize City on last Saturday morning.The gym was packed to capacity with Catholic faithful from throughout the country, to witness as the Papal Nuncio to El Salvador, Archbishop Most Rev. Leon Kalenga, led the concelebrated mass along with Most Rev. Christopher Glancy, the Auxiliary Bishop of Belize City and Belmopan, and five other Bishops from the Caribbean and New Orleans, Louisiana USA.With a large contingency present from Nicasio's hometown of Dangriga, Nicasio's has taught at both Sacred Heart Primary School and Holy Ghost Primary Schools. The Sugar City contingent was only slightly less, as Nicasio had served first as Associate pastor and then as the Pastor of La Inmaculada parish in Orange Walk Town for 13 years. and Opposition Leader Hon. John Briceno and Dangriga area representative, Minister Hon. Frank "Pawpa" Mena, were among the honoured guests in the audience. Charge de Affaires Adrienne Kalanek of the United States Embassy in Belmopan and Belize Ambassador to the Holy See, Mr. Harry Lawrence were also present. It seemed almost a re-enactment of Garifuna Settlement Day; as the Garifuna women's choir, the Belize Choral Society and Spanish Choir led the congregation in singing hymns in Garifuna, English and Spanish. Garifuna drummers led the offertory procession, which included a number of traditional Garifuna foods, as well as a "ruguma", a woven straw tubular strainer used to squeeze out the liquids from ground cassava before making cassava bread. Bishiop Nicasio chose the "ruguma' as part of his shield, since as a child he often sat on a log, which tightened the ruguma in his mother's kitchen. He chose as his motto: "Sollicitum ambulare cum Deo" - "Walking humbly with God". Arch Bishop Kalenga presented Bishop Nicasio with the ring, miter and pastoral staff of his office during the ordination rite. Nicasio was appointed Bishop of Belize on January 26th of this year, after Bishop Monsignor Dorick Wright's resigned from office due to poor health and failing eyesight. Bishop Wright was present, albeit in a wheelchair, and he gave Bishop Nicasio his blessing. Bishop Nicasio was born in Dangriga on September 5, 1956, the second son of six siblings born to Ruben and Juana Lewis Nicasio: Nelson, Herbert, Nicholas, Agnes and Marcella. He attended Augustine High School in Dangriga and later attended the Belize Teachers College in Belize City, where he received his teachers' diploma. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy from the Cardinal Glennon Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, USA and his Masters in Divinity from the Kenrick Theological Seminary in St. Louis. He had also served as Principal of the San Francisco Geronimo R.C. school in Toledo and was ordained a Deacon in 1988 and was ordained to the priesthood on June 16, 1989. He first served as Associate Pastor of the Our Lady of Guadalupe parish in Belmopan; as well as Pastor at the St. John Vianney and St. Ignatius parishes in Belize City.

Southwest Airlines begins daily flight from Ft. Lauderdale to Belize
Belize City, Monday, June 5th, 2017
: Belize welcomed yesterday, June 4th, Southwest Airlines' first daily direct flight from Fort Lauderdale.
To mark the occasion, two inaugural ceremonies were held, one in Ft Lauderdale prior to the flight departure and the other in Belize.
Speaking at the Ft. Lauderdale ceremony, Hon. Manuel Heredia Jr., Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation said, "Today marks a new milestone for our country, as we bolster our presence in North America, but also as we fortify our partnership with Southwest Airlines. This new service to Belize is a resounding reaffirmation that Belize continues to be a growing, viable and a must-go destination in the Caribbean and Latin American Travel Market. I am happy to say that we remain committed and today serves as yet another example of how Team Belize is ensuring that our jewel remains accessible to the North American market and beyond."
In Belize, the Belize Tourism Board organized a brief ceremony which included short addresses by Jorge Espat, Chief Executive Officer of the BACC, Adrienne Galanek, Chargé d'Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Belize, Yashin Dujon, CEO in the Ministry of Tourism & Civil Aviation and Linda Neal, Southwest Station Manager, a raffle give away courtesy of Victoria House and Maya Island Air as well as a cultural presentation by the Precision Dance Group.
The ceremony also included a cutting of the symbolic ribbon, a water canon salute upon the aircraft's arrival and give-aways to both arriving and departing passengers, courtesy of BTB.
Among the dignitaries on the inaugural flight were senior Southwest officials namely, Jack Smith, Sr. Vice President Operations, Brian Parrish, Operational Communications, Chris Fisher, Network Planning and Kimberly Wood, Operations.
"Currently Southwest has been expanding its operations in Central America and Belize is an important destination for us. We are thankful for the partnership that has evolved and grown continuously between Belize and Southwest," Mr. Jack Smith said.
Only three months ago Southwest introduced its first flight from Denver, Colorado to Belize, through a non-stop service. The airline also offers regular non-stop service from Hobby International in Houston. The Ft. Lauderdale - Belize flight will provide yet another direct connection, from the east coast of the United States.
The flight will operate daily from a new, five-gate international Concourse A at Broward County's Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Terminal 1 that opened just as the summer travel season kicks off.
The new flight will make it easier for travelers to enjoy the beauty, the myriad attractions and warm hospitality of Belize at a time when the tourism industry is poised for further growth.

Recipe of the Month
Belizean Stewed Chicken
INGREDIENTS:
1 4-lb. Chicken cut into small pieces
1 Clove garlic
1 teasp. Thyme, salt, pepper
Cilantro
1 tiny sliver of ginger
2 tablsps. Chopped onions
1 tablesp. Chopped green or red sweet pepper
1/4 teasp. Cumin ( cominos)
1 teasp. Brown sugar
1 small ripe tomato
Dime size red recado
Vinegar or lemon juice
DIRECTIONS:
Wash chicken pieces and season with, vinegar or lemon juice, red recado, salt, pepper, thyme, cumin, cilantro. Heat 2 tablsps. Cooking oil, add brown sugar and watch carefully to avoid burning. Let sugar cook until completely melted and turns dark brown. Add clove of garlic that has been smashed and chopped as fine as possible. Add ginger and fry, stirring, remove ginger when it gets brown. Add chicken and brown properly on all sides. Add remaining seasoning from chicken, chopped onions, sweet pepper and tomato and add about a half cup of water. Reduce heat to medium and cover pot. Let simmer, adding water so that pot is never completely dry. Cook for about 1 hour until chicken is very tender. Belizean's favourite way to serve stewed chicken is with rice and beans.
