Mini-Grants Available for Research on Women's Issues

 

Faculty, don't miss this opportunity! The College of Health is offering three $5,000 mini-grants to study issues relevant to women. This is a great opportunity for new or established researchers to obtain seed money for a small scale project that may provide the basis for a larger study. The deadline is 5 pm, May 1, 2015. Register Now! Collaborative Arctic Seminar in Epidemiology  

Registration closes May 1, 2015. College of Health graduate students are invited to attend the Collaborative Arctic Seminar in Epidemiology (CASE) August 3-7 in Yellowknife, NWT. The National Prevention Research Conference is Still Seeking Proposals for Presentations 


The State of Alaska, Division of Behavioral Health is a tri-state sponsor of the upcoming annual National Prevention Network's Prevention Research Conference scheduled for November 17-19 in Seattle, WA. The theme is "Prevention Research to Practice in a Changing Environment." Proposals are due Monday, May 4. For more information, and to fill out an application, visit: 
COH Curriculum Committee to Meet Wednesdays

  

The COH Curriculum Committee will hold its regular meeting on Wednesdays, 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm. The deadline for submission of materials for committee review is Monday at 9am, the week prior to the meeting. Submit electronic files in Word format to Harriet Paule (hrpaule@uaa.alaska.edu). CHD Presented at First AKEN Conference

 

The first Alaska Evaluation Network (AKEN) conference took place April 1-2 at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium building. Members of the Center for Human Development research team presented the following topics:

Dr. Blumenstein Invited to Coalition for Change
 
The recently formed Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition for Change at UAA includes faculty and staff who are working on developing prevention programs and policy recommendations for the campus. The group will be asking students to become involved in these efforts. Dr. Lindsey Blumenstein, Justice Center faculty, is a member of the coalition. Her areas of expertise include intimate partner violence, sexual assault and the college population, kidnapping, and research methods. Alaska Justice Statistical Analysis Center (AJSAC) Releases Fact Sheet

Khristy Parker's AJSAC fact sheet "Violent Crimes Compensation Board: Claims, FY 2004-FY 2014" presents data on new claims filed, types of crime, types of expenses for which compensation was claimed, and compensation totals. On average, the five most common violent crimes resulting in applications for compensation over the eleven-year period were sexual abuse of a minor, domestic violence, assault, sexual assault of adults, and homicide. Dr. Blumenstein Talks to Gruening Middle School Class About Sexual Assault

In February, Dr. Lindsey Blumenstein, Justice faculty, spoke to Gruening Middle School students about the issue of sexual assault in Alaska. The students in Victoria Otte's 8th grade social studies class are participating in Project Citizen and are in the process of choosing a public policy topic to focus on for their project. Criminal Justice Honor Society to Welcome New Members

 

Alpha Phi Sigma National Criminal Justice Honor Society will welcome new members on Thursday, April 23, noon, at the Justice Center. Moose's Tooth pizza will be served. If you are a new inductee, come by and pick up your certificate and pin. Existing member are invited to stop by to say hello. Justice Major to Present at UAA Community Engagement Forum

 

On April 24, Daniel Reinhard, Justice major, will present at the 6th Annual UAA Community Engagement Forum sponsored by the Center for Community Engagement and Learning. Daniel will discuss his research project "Crime and Disorder at Town Square Park," which is related to his research with Dr. Troy Payne, Justice faculty, in collaboration with the Anchorage Police Department and the Anchorage Downtown Partnership.
