| Autism At Center Of New Netflix Series 'Atypical' |

The coming-of-age story of an 18-year-old with autism is headed to Netflix.
The streaming service said it will debut the eight-episode series "Atypical" later this summer.
The half-hour show is presented from the perspective of Sam, a teen on the spectrum played by Keir Gilchrist, who's looking to gain independence and find love.

1 in 5 Kids with Tourette Syndrome Meet Autism Criteria

A new study shows that about one in five children with Tourette syndrome also meet criteria for autism. But the researchers believe this prevalence may be due to a similarity in symptoms rather than actual autism.
Researchers at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) tested 294 children and 241 adults with Tourette's for autism, using a self-reporting test called the Social Responsiveness Scale. The findings show that 22.8 percent of the children reached the cutoff for autism, versus 8.7 percent of the adults. In the general population, autism is estimated to affect only 0.3 to 2.9 percent, according to studies cited in the paper.

Behaviors of Children on Playground Equipment

The behaviors of children on playground equipment was examined using 32 hours of videotape collected from 140 children who were typically developing and 41 children with a variety of developmental disabilities including autism, ADHD, sensory and regulatory disorders ages 3 to 15 years.
The research was published in a recent issue of the Journal of Occupational Therapy, Schools, & Early Intervention. The videotaping focused on six pieces of playground equipment and was analyzed using a behavioral coding system for sensory features, social interaction, self-regulation, motor skills, and play levels.

Researchers ID Network of Neurons Crucial for Vocal Learning

Researchers have identified a network of neurons that plays a vital role in learning vocalizations by aiding communication between motor and auditory regions of the brain.
A new study from the Peter O'Donnell Jr. Brain Institute demonstrates in songbirds the necessity of this neural circuit to learn vocalizations at a young age, a finding that expands the scientific understanding of some contributing factors in speech disorders in humans.

There have been toy fads for decades. From Rubik's Cubes to Duncan yo-yos, from Slinkys to Tamagotchis, and more recently, app-loaded cell phones and handheld game consoles, these trendy toys are fun, addictive, and increasingly forbidden in most classrooms because they distract students from learning. Now there's a new craze sweeping the country: fidget spinners. Like their predecessors, they are an entertaining and mesmerizing diversion for most students. To use one, you hold the spinner center between your thumb and a finger and flick the spinner with a finger to start the spinner rotating. Preventing Over ID of Bilingual Speech Students

We have all seen comparisons of Spanish to English that help us work with children across languages. But what do we focus on in our English-only therapy with children who speak Spanish in other contexts, such as with friends or at home?
Disproportionality, over-representation, and over-identification of bilingual speech students are all terms highlighting the fact that the proportion of English language learners in special education is higher than in general education. As professionals, we want to do best for these kids but part of the problem is that we don't always have the tools and information we need to make confident decisions about who we serve.
