In the Field: Banksia Baxteri
We've long admired the powerful Banksia. Strong, resilient and bold, this spiny protea is far from a delicate flower-and yet when it blooms, it blooms with the best of them. From long, distinctive cylinder-like flowers to petite round blooms, there's over 75 diverse species to choose from. And unlike many of the Australian Proteaceae, the main flush of Banksia come not in spring but in summer and autumn.

June is California Grown Flowers Month
Did you know that June is California Grown Flower Month?
This month, California Sen. Mike McGuire took to the floor of the Senate to urge his colleagues to support California's flower-farming families by passing Senate Concurrent Resolution 58 declaring June "California Grown Flowers Month." In presenting the resolution, McGuire acknowledged California's hardworking flower farmers for the beauty, variety and economic value their flowers bring the Golden State.

Summer Essentials: Foliage
Foliage is trending this summer, from leafy garlands, to lush wreaths and verdant displays. We love the remarkable array of shapes and sizes that are found in nature, from long, thin, oval, round, lacey, feathery and serrated. These wonderful botanicals add volume, texture and height to decor. And when it comes to color, most foliage is green, simply because all photosynthetic plants rely on chlorophyll for energy.

Behind the Scenes: June Farm Tour
Farm tours are a wonderful way to celebrate the season, especially in June... California Grown Flowers Month!. The last six months, we've had the pleasure to exhibit in several Garden shows and to do Protea presentations for local horticulture clubs. These events provided us a welcome break from our normal farm activities and gave us the opportunity to explore the community.

The inaugural Arroyo Seco Weekend wrapped up on Sunday. Goldenvoice, the promoter of the event called this two-day festival "multigenerational," geared toward families and folks in their mid-30s and up, rather than the typically crowd packs these gatherings. It was a festival where someone can go with their grandma, mom, sister or toddler and enjoy rock, soul, jazz, funk, and blues acts.

Hello Friends!
I hope your summer is off to a great start! We've had a busy and eventful month here on the farm as we wrapped up pincushion season and started preparing for an early protea harvest... yes, Pink Ice in July! Plus, foliage has been very popular this month with eucalyptus and grevillea topping the list. I've enjoyed seeing many of the flowers and foliage we grow featured during special occasions, events and community activities.
June is California Grown Flowers month. We kicked off the celebration by rallying in Sacramento along with several other flower farmers striving to help raise the profile of flower farming in California and encourage lawmakers to support this year's resolution to declare June as "California Grown Flowers Month." It was a great example of farmers working together and promoting what value they bring to their communities and the economy!
When it comes to farm tours, June is an ideal month and we had a great time with the
MiraCosta Horticulture Club.
It was a
perfect morning to show the group around and let them experience a typical day here on the farm.
If you're one of those folks who loves flowers, cameras and fun events, you should meet Mud Baron and his students. Did you see our blog on Arroyo Seco Weekend? Well, Mud and his students worked the two-day event putting CAGrown flowers on the heads of attendees, taking their pictures and bringing smiles to everyone's face. The students were in charge of arranging and displaying all the flowers at the event and they did a great job. The bouquets were beautiful and attracted a crowd! Muir Ranch students have also created a special line of custom bouquets and arrangements for weddings and local businesses. When customers choose Muir Ranch, they are making a conscious choice to support a student-run social enterprise aimed at teaching at-risk youth invaluable business and life skills through hands on learning. Every bouquet purchased funds the year-round internship program for the students.
This week is
American Flowers Week - June 28 - July 4th. It's a week-long celebration of domestic flowers designed to raise consumer awareness and unite America's flower farmers with the U.S. floral industry.
