ASES 2017 Fellow's Symposium

Dr. Robert H. Cofield, MD, center, with the fellows attending the ASES 2017 Fellows Symposium.

On Friday, June 16th, the ASES held the inaugural ASES Fellow's Symposium at the San Diego Shoulder Institute (SDSI) in San Diego, California. Chaired by Drs. Field, Mighell, Pinto, Provencher, Ryu, and Verma, the program exceeded the faculty and participants’ expectations.
Twenty-nine shoulder and elbow fellows, as well as several attendees of SDSI and the ASES industry partners, attended this special session. Dr. Savoie, ASES President, welcomed special guests: Dr. Bob Cofield, ASES Past President, Dr. Jim Esch, SDSI President and CEO, and Dr. Jon J.P. Warner, SDSI Board Member.
A dynamic and thought-provoking program included 22 abstract presentations given by fellows, and two faculty presentations given by Dr. Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo and Dr. Mark Pinto addressing how to get started in practice and manage time and finances. After each block of abstract presentations, fellows formed a panel and answered questions from the faculty and audience. A few abstracts were also approved for posters and were available for viewing throughout the course. All fellows and faculty participated in the SDSI Faculty Reception following the Fellow's Symposium.
Fellow paper presentations were rated by a review panel and the Robert H. Cofield, MD, Award, given for the first time, to Christopher L. Camp, MD (first place) for the paper entitled: “Decreased Shoulder External Rotation and Flexion Are Greater Prediction of Injury Than Internal Rotation Deficits: Analysis of 132 Pitcher-Seasons in Professional Baseball” and Brandon Horn, DO (second place) for the paper “Comorbidity Effect on Speed of recovery After Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair.” ASES congratulates Dr. Camp, at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, NY, Dr. Horn, at the Holy Cross Orthopaedic Institute in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and the co-authors on excellent research projects.
Over 2-years in the making, the first ASES Fellow’s Symposium was a great success worth repeating in the years to come. The program objectives were to expose fellows to one of the premier courses on shoulder and elbow in North America, familiarize them with our society, highlight their research, and offer coaching and networking opportunities. The ASES leadership plans to continue partnering with SDSI and looks forward to welcoming even more fellows next year.
The Fellow’s Symposium was generously sponsored by the San Diego Shoulder Institute, DJO Global, Smith & Nephew, Exactech, Zimmer Biomet, and the ASES Foundation.
