The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) crafted the first model hate crime legislation in America, and 45 states plus the District of Columbia now have laws based on or similar to ADL's model. ADL's work has led to hate crimes becoming a stand-alone field of criminal law, inspiring police departments to form bias crime units and provide special training.
As leaders of the faith community, you will be able to gain an understanding of what constitutes a hate crime, their impact, what motivates hate crimes, general offender typologies as well as relevant trends ADL is seeking in our country and your community.

It is a joy to welcome Ms. Courtland Powers to the OCC Staff as Executive Assistant to the Executive Director. Courtland comes to us with a great deal of experience in administration, finance, and fundraising. She has a B.B.A. in Management from Langston University, a M.A. in Nonprofit Leadership from Oklahoma City Univeristy, and an M.B.A. in Organizational Development from Oklahoma Christian University.
Most recently, Courtland was the Interim Executive Director of the Wesley Foundation at Langston University. Prior to that she was the Fundraising and Operations Manager of the Center for Children and Families, Inc. in Norman, Oklahoma.

CELEBRATING RAMADAN
The OCC Staff enjoyed a wonderful month of Ramadan with our Muslim brothers and sisters. There were more Interfaith Iftar events held this year than in years previous, a positive sign for the interfaith community of Oklahoma. Here are a few photos from the celebrations during this holy month.

The Summer Food Service Program is designed to fill the nutrition gap and make sure children can get the nutritious meals they need.
During the school year, many children receive free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch through the
School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs. What happens when school lets out?
Hunger is one of the most severe roadblocks to the learning process. Lack of nutrition during the summer months may set up a cycle for poor performance once school begins again. Hunger also may make children more prone to illness and other health issues.
The Summer Food Service Program is designed to fill the nutrition gap and make sure children can get the nutritious meals they need.

Camp Anytown, Oklahoma 2017 will be held July 30 - August 5 at St. Crispin's Conference Center and Camp. This program promotes self- esteem, good citizenship, and leadership in an atmosphere steeped in rich diversity. Incoming sophomores, juniors, and seniors from across Oklahoma are eligible to participate in this award-winning, human relations camp. The Anytown program ranks among the preeminent human relations experiences in Oklahoma.

Aly Shahan is an active member of Moore First United Methodist Church and layperson in the Oklahoma Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. She has served as Director of Youth Ministries for the First United Methodist Church of Lexington, and Moore First United Methodist Church. Additionally, Aly has served as Administrative Assistant to Discipleship Ministries for the Oklahoma Annual Conference of the UMC, and as Conference Director of the Re-Ignite Workshops, the state-wide lay leadership training for the Oklahoma Conference.
Aly currently serves as Associate Conference Lay Leader for Young Adults and Young Families, as Co-Chair for the Annual Conference Council, and Annual Conference Council Management Team for the OKUMC.
Aly has served as a delegate to General Conference, representing Oklahoma at the world-wide United Methodist gatherings, and a two-time delegate to Jurisdictional Conference, representing Oklahoma at South Central Jurisdictional gatherings in 2012 and 2016.
Aly is married to Adam, an Elder in the Oklahoma Conference of the UMC, and they have two wonderful children.

Consider becoming a COOL ZONE
We know that Oklahoma is a pretty cool place to live, but when we enter the hottest months of the year, it's hard for many to keep cool. We see far too many heat-related incidents and deaths, especially in the elderly and disabled community, and we ask that you consider helping to prevent these unnecessary incidents.
Residents in Central Oklahoma need a place to cool off during the heat of an oppressive summer day. As temperatures and humidity outside climb to dangerous levels, many Oklahomans do not have a safe place to go for relief and to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Additional locations are needed to reach unserved areas of the Oklahoma City metro. Would your church or worship center be willing to participate in meeting this need? And if you are outside of the OKC metro, have you considered a similar program in your area?
