Etiquette for Engineers: Painless Networking Workshop

The SEAMASS Young Members Group hosted a filled-to-capacity workshop on July 30 titled,
Etiquette for Engineers: Painless Networking. Marianne Cohen of Mannersmith Etiquette Consulting led an interactive presentation on how to handle business situations -- from conferences to cocktail parties -- with poise and confidence.

Participants learned a variety of essential networking skills.
|
Topics included: what to know before you go, name tag placement, shaking hands, body language, connecting with clients and customers, and building better business relationships. After the presentation, participants practiced their new networking skills while enjoying food and beverages.

Irregular Building Design in Accordance with the 2012/2015 IBC
|
 More than 40 attendees participated in the seminar presented by Dr. Timothy Mays on Aug 10, titled Irregular Building Design in Accordance with the 2012/2015 IBC. Dr. Mays discussed critical factors such as plan layout, aesthetics, space planning and other issues that often result in irregularities, the presence of which leads to code required modeling and detailing enhancements that are not often discussed in practical design guides or textbooks on lateral design.
Dr. Mays explained how and why building irregularities impact structural design, and provided several examples of how to appropriately analyze and design lateral force resisting elements for various types of irregular buildings located in Seismic Design Category (SDC) B and D. Participants each received a copy of the Guide to Design for Common Irregularities in Buildings - 2012 IBC and ASCE/SEI 7-10.

at the 2015 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit

Michael Fillion, PE, SECB will represent SEAMASS at the 2015 NCSEA Structural Engineering Summit from Sept 30-Oct 3 in Las Vegas, NV.
He will participate in NCSEA Committee meetings on October 3 and a Delegate Interaction Meeting on October 4, in advance of the general summit keynote address and meetings.
Mike is currently preparing a list of concerns from our chapter members, to share with fellow delegates as they exchange ideas on best practices. Please contact Mike to propose issues for him bring to the Summit.

On the USGS website, visit the
U.S. Seismic Design Maps
page to determine the MCE spectral response accelerations Ss & S1. These factors are automatically calculated by entering the Design Code Reference Document, Site Address, Site Soil Classification and Occupancy Category.

SEAMASS President
Mike Berry, PE completed the Pan-Mass Challenge on August 1-2, riding from Sturbridge to Bourne, MA over two days. Mike explains, "
When my friend (and best man from my wedding) was seriously ill, I felt helpless. The PMC was my way of contributing something to help fight cancer, and it was a great experience." He jokingly added, "
The hardest part was staying overnight in a pup tent!" (Riders can also choose stay in a hotel.)
About the PMC:
The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is an annual bike-a-thon that runs through 46 towns in Massachusetts. Since 1980, the PMC has since raised $455 million for adult and pediatric cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) through the Jimmy Fund.
Cyclists choose from 12 routes of varying mileage designed to cater to all levels of cycling strength and fundraising ability. There are six two-day routes that range from 132 to 190 miles and six one-day rides that range from 25 to 110 miles. Cyclists are required to raise between $500 and $5,200 to ride in the PMC, depending on the chosen route.
