Happy 241st Birthday, America!
Celebrate Independence at the Crossroads of the American Revolution

Did you know that the first official Independence Day celebration took place here in New Jersey? Headquartered at Piscataway on July 4, 1778, General George Washington ordered 11,000 Continental troops to line the banks of the Raritan River and fire their rifles in a salute called feu de joie.  Read more about this "fire of joy" in our July Revolutionary NJ blog .

You can enjoy a mini- feu de joie and more as Middlesex County celebrates our nation's independence with more than a week of events celebrating our nation's birthday. A Star-Spangled Sing-Along, fireworks, unveiling of a statue of local patriot Col. John Neilson and a reading of the Declaration of Independence are just a few of the activities awaiting you. Discover history where it happened!  More information.

These Raritan Valley-area celebrations are just a few of the many events this year to bring an 18th century flair to annual July 4 fun around New Jersey. Check our online calendar for even more!

Crossroads Heritage Partners including the Dey Mansion, Liberty Hall Museum, Snyder Academy and Boxwood Hall will host performances, tours and discussions, focusing on Hamilton's formative years as a student and his service on Washington's staff. The events are sponsored by the Alexander Hamilton Awareness Society as part of a larger regional annual commemoration. More information

Remembering Dan Campanelli

The staff and trustees of the Crossroads of the American Revolution were saddened to learn of the passing of historian and watercolor artist Dan Campanelli. His landscapes of historic sites have long been reproduced as fine art prints sought by collectors and as sought-after limited editions produced to raise funds for non-profit organizations.

Despite his long illness, Dan continued to promote local history through watercolor depictions of early Hunterdon County tavern signs included in a commemorative calendar for Hunterdon 300th, which he and his wife Marty researched and designed jointly. We join countless friends in the historic preservation community in mourning his loss.
Heritage Area Partners renew with Crossroads

Historic sites and organizations throughout New Jersey are enlisting in the cause of heritage tourism as they become Crossroads Heritage Partners. While they tell their part of the story of the American Revolution here in the Garden State, each Partner enjoys programming and marketing support that helps them reach even more visitors. Partner representatives are also eligible to participate in workshops and professional development seminars to help them make the most of their organizations' historical offerings.

This month, we're grateful to report the continuing membership of the Hunterdon County Cultural and Heritage Commission , the  Ocean County Cultural and Heritage Commission and the  Washington Association of New Jersey .

For more information on how your organization can take part in the benefits of Heritage Area partnership, contact our Program Manager, Kate Knowles-Brindle by e-mail or by phone at 609-341-3246.
