Thank You from Reading Camp!

From Reading Camp Director Rebecca Saager:

Reading Camp children and their families thank you. Here is a typical response:

One parent told me that her child, a struggling reader, was extremely upset when she found out that her mother had enrolled her in a "reading camp" this summer. On the first day of camp, the child was quiet and reluctant to participate. By Wednesday, she was smiling and having fun. By Friday, she didn't want camp to end! Her mother said to me,  "I just wanted to thank you for inviting [name] to Reading Camp. She was so excited every day. She couldn't wait to tell me about her day. She says reading can be fun! On the last day coming home I had some errands to run; she read an entire book while I ran my errands!!! She wants to attend camp next year. She said the only bad thing about camp was that it only lasted a week."

THAT is why we do Reading Camp!  I would like to add my own heartfelt gratitude for all the volunteers that gave of their time, talents and resources to participate in this ministry to reach out to some of God's children who are in need.

The 2017 Frankfort Reading Camp is in the record books, and all involved proclaim a great success for the fifth consecutive year! Many volunteers, teachers, and buddy counselors worked tirelessly to ensure a fun and productive experience for the campers, and many donations of cash, food and other items helped to make the camp financially self-supporting. The campers expressed a newfound interest in reading; their wide variety of experiences in Reading Camp will help to make each one a more confident and interested reader.

Our mission is to meet some of the educational, social and emotional needs of "struggling readers" each summer by providing a FREE week in a day camp environment. At Reading Camp each child receives intensive reading instruction geared to his/her needs, participates in groups with other children who share the same struggles, discovers that he/she is "smart" and reading is possible. Chances of summer learning loss that is so prevalent among at-risk students are reduced.

Equally important, children grow socially and emotionally by enjoying experiences that they may not have at home, testing their confidence and abilities and discovering new skills, talents and interests. Most importantly, they develop relationships with adults that teach them trust and discipline, and increase their self-esteem. Reading Camp nourishes the mind, body and spirit, developing children holistically.

This camp would not have been such a success without your support. Thank you.
Ascension's commitment to outreach and social justice moved from Reading Camp wrap-up on Friday to the Lexington Pride Festival on Saturday, where we represented our congregation as affirming and accepting of all God's people.
