This meeting will provide information on the current initiative to have street humps installed on Farewell Road as a traffic calming measure. Howard County conducted vehicle count and speed studies and determined that Farewell Road is eligible to have speed humps installed. A group of residents presented concerns about speeding on Farewell Road to the Oakland Mills Board and the Board supported their initiative to proceed with the speed hump process.
Howard County's guidelines for installing street humps require that a roadway be deemed eligible by conducting traffic studies and the type of road designation. After the studies Farewell Road was deemed eligible. The next step was for residents to form a Traffic Action Committee. The committee was formed and has met several times with County Traffic Engineers and is following the guidelines established by the County.
The County engineers have approved the proposed location of the street humps and approved the ballot for residents impacted to use to vote to support or not support the street humps. A vote of 67% of those impacted who support the street humps is required for the County to install street humps. There is one vote per property and, if the property owner declines to vote that vote is counted as a no vote. The 67% is the total of all impacted properties.
Committee members are currently reaching out to their neighbors providing information on the proposal and, if the property owner is home the committee members are leaving a ballot. Literature provided by the committee includes committee names and contact information. Committee members will be represented at the July 12 meeting and ballots will be available that evening.
