Just before the recent visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US, US government has issued a clarification on H1B visas. In addition to the 65,000 visas issued to those who have secured a job in the US, 20,000 H1B visas can be issued to the students who have pursued higher education in the US. While in India, important reform, GST (Goods and Services Tax), is being rolled out on 1st of July.
Though the GST on education services is nil, input tax cost (renting, telecommunication etc.) concerns remain.
Another import reform in discussion is replacement of AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) and UGC (University Grants Commission) with
HEERA (Higher Education Empowerment Regulation Agency)
. Considering these developments Indian higher education sector is in flux at the moment.
