Introduce Your Interns and Residents to the Benefits of VOS Membership

Summer is often a slow time for the VOS, but it is a great opportunity to introduce incoming interns and residents about the opportunities of being a VOS member. Yearly dues for interns and residents are only $25, and as a member they have access to a surprising amount of grant money to fund their research projects. The Hohn-Johnson Research Award provides up to $40,000 in funding and the Wade O. Brinker Research Award provides up to $12,000 in funding. Multiple grants may be funded each year. Detailed information is available on the VOS website. The deadline for both awards is October 1, 2017.

Current residents may also apply for the Mark Bloomberg Resident Research Award. This award allows recipients to travel to the VOS meeting to present their research. Registration for the annual meeting is discounted for student, intern, and resident members, and further discounted if they are presenting.

Alan Cross Members also receive discounted subscriptions to VCOT, which is required reading for the ACVS board exam.

If you are involved in resident and intern training, please mention the VOS to your incoming veterinarians and let them know what we have to offer.

VOS Scientific Program Chair and Assistant Scientific Program Chair

We invite practitioners, academicians, and researchers interested in large animal, small animal, and exotic species, to submit abstracts of novel studies in practical and scientific topics related to veterinary orthopedics and traumatology. Preference will be given to abstracts that have clinical relevance. Papers addressing results of controlled retrospective and prospective clinical studies are strongly encouraged. Presentations will be limited to 10 minutes and followed by 5 minutes of discussion. Posters must fit within the 4' (height) x 4' (width) area provided.

Call for papers will open on August 15th 2017 and close on October 15th 2017 for both podium presentations and posters. See the link on the VOS website:
www.vosdvm.org for full details of abstract submission, formatting and regulations.

Submission categories will be:
  • Clinical/Scientific Studies
  • Case reports: a maximum of three novel or interesting cases
The Mark S. Bloomberg Memorial Resident Research Award was established to recognize outstanding resident abstract submissions to the scientific program. Only individuals currently in a residency training program or within 2 years of completion of a formal residency program are eligible. SPOTLIGHT ON ...
ORTHOMED spotlight
Orthomed logo Location: Vero Beach, Florida

What year was the company started?
Orthomed started in the UK in 2001 with a vison of offering the highest quality orthopedic implants in the industry. We are now a globally recognised company with a passion for improving the quality of veterinary instruments within the industry.

To this day we are still independently owned by the founder of the company.

What products / services does your company offer?
We are committed to progressing the veterinary industry and the people that work in it. That has been our ethos from the start and we now work with universities, referral centres and general practitioners. We are probably recognised for three core products. Our SOP™ locking plate system, MMP TTA system and the RidgeStop™ system which offers an alternative to a sulcoplasty.

We understand the importance of maintaining the 'gold standard' of manufacturing and this applies to everything whether it be screws, TPLO plates or any other products in our catalogue.

What should Veterinary Orthopedic Society members know about your company?
We are aware that the success of our products hinges upon the experiences of the surgeons who use them, and with this in mind, educating them in the use of the products is a hugely important part of what we do.

We believe very strongly in offering the highest levels of education and we have a full faculty of global educators; ACVS qualified and some of the most experienced orthopedic surgeons in the world, each with their own different character and views. These surgeons not only educate the industry but they also work extremely closely with us to be able to design and engineer some of the greatest implants available in the orthopedic industry .

Can you explain a challenging situation that your company was able to solve?
We're very proud that we're able to support surgeons either with product or technical advice to enable them to carry out some of the most complicated surgeries with unrivalled support. By working with our Key Opinion Leaders we ensure that whatever the procedure may involve, we're able to support the surgeon all the way from pre-op to post-op.

This support enables surgeons, whether they are specialists or general practitioners to carry out the procedure with confidence and enables them to install this with the patient owner also.

Can you tell us about any new products or services your company is developing?
We like to think that we're at the forefront of developing the veterinary orthopedic industry and we only bring products to market that we know can make a real difference. We are not in the habit of copying other manufacturers ideas or launching something without having 100% confidence in it.

We're currently working on numerous projects, many of which arose from market feedback. We're very excited about adding an extension to our SOP™ locking plate system which shouldn't be too far off now - watch this space!
