Rector's Ramblings

Fr. Tom and family are away for three weeks so Deacon Ashton and I will be bringing you the weekly ramblings. Becky +

A group I recently shared some time with enjoyed a long meandering conversation as we worked together. One of the rabbit trails we wandered down was THAT ROOM in our houses.  We all have one - the bedroom or office or garage - the place where we all throw things that we might someday need, or can't figure out where to put, or plan to give them away, since they are too good to toss out.

Worship

Kidurgy All Summer
This year, we will have Kidurgy for our young children throughout the summer. Kidurgy is a child-friendly liturgy of the Word which takes place during the 9:15 service on Sunday. The children gather in the Parish Hall to sing, read scripture and pray from their own bulletins. There is even a short homily. Then they return to the church to receive communion with their families.

Flower Donations
If you would like to glorify the altar at Christ Church by donating flowers in honor or in memory of a loved one or friend, please contact Ethel Horton at 912-634-8327.

Icon Writing Workshop in August
Icon  writing is much more than learning to paint an  icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making  icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted  icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing.

Our instructor is Fr. David Holland, who has been teaching icon writing for  24  years. No previous artistic ability is needed. Fr.  David  has never had anyone not finish an  icon . We will  write  the  icons  shown above.

Our icon writing workshop August 20th-26th is limited to 16 people, so please register soon. We will meet in the Christ Church Parish Hall from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday - Thursday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm on Friday and 8:30 am - 12:00 pm on Saturday.

The only thing you need to bring is a willing spirit, as Fr. David will furnish all materials and instruction. On Sunday, August 27, our icons will be blessed during Sunday morning services. The cost for the workshop is $425. To register, call the church office at 912-638-8683. For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at [email protected] or give her a call.

Goats, Gospel and New Approaches

By John La Boone

"Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them." - Isaiah 42:9

One of the greatest challenges for congregations, as well as for individual human beings is looking at new ways to do things. Too often our lives are ruled by the dreaded Eight Deadly Words, which are: "But we've never done it that way before!" Opportunities great and small can go by unnoticed because of a too-strong attraction to the familiar and its attendant desire for the illusion of security.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Take the example of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in West Valley City, Utah. They recently found themselves with the task of clearing a vacant acre-and-a-half plot of overgrown, weed-choked church land. They could have hired someone with a lot of expensive heavy equipment or they could have possibly just rented some equipment themselves and attempted the job with volunteers. Those ideas were considered. But when a member of the congregation suggested that they rent goats from a local farm instead, they opted to employ a herd of goats.

Camp Kanuga - A Fun Time for All!

Camp Kanuga sizzled with excitement for five days at Christ Church last week! Campers from ages 5 through 11 enjoyed games, songs, dances, sports, arts and crafts and every kind of camp activity imaginable under the direction of the great young staff from Kanuga. Many thanks to all who supported this week of camp ministry and to those who treated the the camp staff a swim party and low country boil. To see more photos from Camp Kanuga, click here.

Outreach

Help Restock the St. Athanasius Food PantryFoodBank
Please remember to bring in your non-perishable  food items for the St. Athanasius  Feed My Sheep Food Pantry Ministry. Pasta, rice, dried pinto beans, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, canned fruits, vegetables (particularly canned tomatoes), meats, and soups are especially needed now.

Books Are Still Needed for the GEM Summer Reading Program!

Many thanks to all who have already donated books, games and more!

GEM (Glynn Episcopal Ministries) really needs your help with our weekly summer reading and  meal pack program at St. Athanasius. We are collecting new and gently used books for the children who visit to read and take home, along with the food packs we provide. Right now, the supply of books is extremely low, so we're asking all who can, to please donate any new or gently used children's books to help build our library. Books may be dropped off at the church office in the Parish House at Christ Church.  For questions and information about signing up to help with this outreach, please contact Becky Matthews at 912-268-2689.

Backpack Buddies - How You Can Help

On Wednesday, the Backpack Buddies packed  bags for Safe Harbor teens, Glynn Episcopal Ministries Summer Fun Friday afternoon kids, and the Children in Action Sports Camp participants. Hunger doesn't take a summer break and neither do the Buddies!

Backpack Buddies is part of Christ Church, Frederica's hunger outreach mission to our local community. This program is celebrating its sixth year in our local schools and its third year of summer programming. It allows our parishioners to live our faith in Christ through food ministry to the disadvantaged. Especially vulnerable are our community's disadvantaged children. Food insecurity is pervasive in children in inner city Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia. Sixty-three percent (approximately 3900) of area elementary school students receive free or reduced price meals during the school week. However, these children lack a reliable source of food on the weekends and during the summer months. Backpack Buddies can feed a child for about $10.00 a month, $50.00 for a half year or $100 for the full 10 month school year. This provides for the food purchase, the storage bag, and gives us a small allowance for special items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, fresh fruit. For more information about how you can get involved, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] or (912) 222-9206.

Help Needed in the Church Office!OfficeHelpNeeded

Join our great group of office volunteers! Here, Pokey Sheffield and Pat Vinton help with this week's bulletins.

We are fortunate to have a wonderful group of dedicated church office volunteers at Christ Church, but are in need of a few new folks to serve as substitute front desk helpers. Our office volunteers greet visitors, direct tourists, answer the phone, help put together bulletins and mailings, and keep the office running smoothly.

If you can help on any weekday, from either 9:00 am through 1:00 pm, or 1:00 through 5:00 pm, please contact our Office Volunteer Coordinator, Pat Vinton, for more details. 912-634-1092

Community

St. Andrew's and St. Cyprian's Fund Raiser
Our friends at St. Andrew's and St. Cyprian's Episcopal Churches in Darien are hard at work on their capital campaign to build a new parish house that both congregations will share. As part of their fund raising effort, they are raffling off a beautiful 1962 Ford Thunderbird Roadster - one of only 450 made that year. This car has won car
show ribbons and has been appraised at over $50,000. If you are interested in buying a raffle ticket to help this worthy cause (and the opportunity to win a fine automobile) please call 912-258-4619. Tickets are $100 and only a maximum of 1000 will be sold. The drawing will take place on July 4, 2017 and you need not be present to win.
