Cherry Students Involved In Community

The end of summer school is quickly approaching but we still have tons of great things happening at the Cherry Campus! This week, the entire school had a great visit from an orchestra who taught our students about the various instrument families and put on a great show. Our third graders have also gotten visits from AL alumni and have had the opportunity to conduct many cool science projects like making slime. We also kicked off a few of our community service projects. First, our second graders partnered with the Kansas City Water Department and learned about the importance of clean water. They wrote meaningful messages related to water cleanliness which will be distributed by Kansas City Water Services. Next, our third graders are embarking on a project with KC Pet Project. Students will be making blankets and beds for the animals while also coordinating a donation drive for pet supplies. All of your support is greatly appreciated! We can't wait to have a great last week full of more fun and meaningful experiences.

All Aboard The Community Train

All aboard the community train! Week five has been exciting, informative and full of community activism for the Oak campus. The 4th grade enjoyed learning about modern sculptures featured at the Nelson Art Gallery. The 5th grade canvassed the neighborhood passing out info on how to keep our water clean and the importance of clean water. They marked water drains to remind people not to pollute while also marking any drains that were effluvium (look it up!). While the 6th grade students made their television debut on Action 41 news. Action 41 news was made aware of the awesome community project they are involved in. Our amazing 6th graders have been making beds for the homeless out of plastic bags. They will continue to make these beds throughout the 2017-2018 school year. These bags make it a little more comfortable for the homeless. And, the 7th and 8th graders went to the Kemper Museum where they engaged in discussion about modern and contemporary art and how it relates to students' education and lives.

Please note that the construction barriers are now up. Please do not park or drop off your children near the parking lot exit. Please drop off your children on 69th street heading East.

Bon weekend!

Free And Reduced Lunch Forms MatterFRL

Families can skip the Federal Programs and Free and Reduced Lunch forms in the enrollment packets.

The Federal Programs and Free and Reduced Lunch forms are very important - and we need all families to complete them.  Not only does this tell you if your child(ren) qualify for Free and Reduced lunch benefits, it also allows you to apply for other assistance programs.  PLUS our school receives more funding each time another family qualifies for these benefits.  Even if you think you do not qualify, please complete the forms.  You will receive an email with a link to the forms within the first two weeks of school. Thank you for helping our school!

Vive l'Amérique!Vivelamerique

Incoming 8 th grade students' work is currently on digital display at the  National WWI Museum and Memorial  as a part of the Vive l'Amérique exhibition. The exhibition showcases drawings by French students in 1917 of the American soldiers' arrival in France and is complemented by some of our own students' drawings in 2017. The exhibition is truly extraordinary and creates a unique connection with the French and American history as allies 100 years ago and today. The free exhibition is in the Ellis Gallery and runs through October 15. Check it out!

Art Teacher And Board Membercommunity

Congratulations to Valerie Beachy for being named Pages & Chapters' board member of the year for her hard work and constant dedication to the organization. Notably, Title I has brought the Pages & Chapters Open Books K-5 Literacy Program to Académie Lafayette in no small part thanks to Valerie's leadership. The program is oriented toward parental involvement, and brings parents and students together in reading with a focus on foundational literacy skills. We would not have this effective program if Valerie had not championed it! Thank you for your hard work, Valerie!
