"We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed..."
- 2 Corinthians 4:8

RESILIENCE : It is a word of which I have become increasingly aware in recent months. Earlier this year I received a post card (mass mailed) from a local church advertising a series of programs titled simply " Resilient ". My wife, Barbara, recently attended a continuing education event for medical and other professionals focusing on " the 16 habits of highly resilient people ", a workshop she found to be very informative and helpful. In addition to these specific examples, I have increasingly noticed the word resilience (or resilient) in general conversations. Perhaps it is being used more frequently, or perhaps I am simply more attuned to it of late.

An internet search reveals the definition of resilience as " the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties " or more generically, " the ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape ".
While resilience is not a new word, it has a modern ring to it. In fact, I did a search of its occurrences in the Bible, and not surprisingly I found no such occurrences, at least not in traditional English translations. The closest word in the biblical vocabulary might be endurance, or perhaps perseverance, both of which have a sort of heavier feeling about them. This is not to say that the idea of resilience is absent from the scriptures. I recall Paul ' s advice to the Romans regarding the experience of trouble or difficulty. Paul wrote, " We also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. " (Romans 5:3-4). Paul ' s words suggest a capacity to recover from difficulty, or at least to experience difficulty in a way that generates, rather than depletes, personal energy.

In the modern self-help vocabulary, resilience is a capacity that can be developed by such practices as gratitude ( " counting one ' s blessings " ), maintaining a healthy balance between work and rest, attending to one ' s physical health, nurturing mutual relationships, and the like, all of which are very worthwhile practices that we do well to engage. To these practices our faith tradition adds the truth that we do not stand alone in facing the difficulties of life. God is with us, or better said, within us, enabling us to grow through our difficulties, even our suffering. From the biblical perspective, it is not so much that we " bounce back ", unchanged by the difficulties we experience; rather, we live through them, emerging from them as new persons continuous with who we were, but different in important ways, steadily becoming new creations forged through the experiences of life. This is where the hope comes in, namely that the difficulties (trials, sufferings) of life are not wasted but rather become meaningful parts of who we are. This is a hope requiring not only resilience, but also faith.

Peace,
Mike Ward

News from the Cathedral Domain: "A Domain Kind of Love"

Larry was from Beattyville and came to the Cathedral Domain to work with Glen Adkins for the summer. Lucy lived in Frankfort and came to the Domain to counsel Girls Camp. I don't know if it was love at first sight but it was a special kind of love. Larry and Lucy dated for the next year and during their second summer on the mountain together, behind the Cathedral, Larry asked Lucy to marry him. That was 50 years ago and now we are honored to host their family as Larry and Lucy renew their vows today, June 9 th. Larry and Lucy have generously supported the ministry of The Domain by funding The Glen Adkins Trading Post every summer. Today we share the joy of celebrating this special love begun in this special place.

Pilgrimage to the 2017 Wild Goose Festival
July 13-16, 2017

This July, the Diocese of Lexington and the Young Adult Commission invite you on a pilgrimage to the 2017 Wild Goose Festival in beautiful Hot Springs, NC. This four-day, outdoor festival gathers Christian activists, artists, musicians, and Jesus freaks of all varieties for a weekend of communal celebration and spiritual renewal.

During a typical Wild Goose day one might take in a main stage musical performance, engage in theological debate with a screenwriter or poet, join a contemplative prayer group, relax with a afternoon hike or a dip in the French Broad River, and enjoy dozens of unexpected conversations under trees, over drinks, and around campfires. Brian McLaren described Wild Goose as "a family reunion where people flock together to celebrate a way of life rooted in faith, justice, creativity, and beauty."

This year the Goose will feature talks and workshops by Jim Wallis ( Sojourners), Diana Butler Bass ( Grounded and Christianity for the Rest of Us), Mike Morrell (co-author of The Divine Dance), William P. Young ( The Shack), and Nadia Bolz-Weber ( Accidental Saints). The full lineup of speakers, musicians, and presenters will be released soon. The festival also provides daily programs and activities for youth and children of all ages.

While most pilgrimages will camp together at Hot Springs State Park, there are also a variety of hostels, hotels, and guesthouses within walking distance of the venue. Information about tickets, performances, and speakers can be found at   wildgoosefestival.org.

Members of our group can receive discounted tickets by using the promotional code "Gabbard". Additional scholarships are available upon request. For more information or to join the DioLex pilgrimage group, contact the Rev. Justin Gabbard at 859-630-2835 or jegabbard@gmail.com.
