Housing Assignments and Move-In Logistics
Living on Campus and Building the Roommate Relationship

Most new students will receive their housing and roommate assignments during the late afternoon of July 14. This is the information that many of them have been waiting for--so expectations are high.

While they are processing this new information, please keep in mind that students should expect to remain in their housing assigment for the coming academic year. While it may not be the building or room that they (or you) always imagined they would live in, please remain positive and encouraging about their new space. Most students quickly adjust to residence hall life. The residence hall staff and RA will be available once they arrive on campus to help with this adjustment.

Suggest that your student connects with their roommate personally (on the phone, if possible) before looking for their social media presence. While it has many advantages, social media provides a limited--and sometimes inaccurate--glimpse into someone's world. The first conversation can be about move-in logistics, this is the start to building their roommate relationship. Some of the conversations they have now lay the ground work for the Roommate Agreement that they will discuss and complete once they move into the residence hall. Though it is several years old, this article from U.S. News & World Report may be helpful.

Here are some links that you may find helpful as you and your student plan.

Please note that all North Campus residence halls have extra long (XL) twin beds.
Moving to Campus

To ensure a smooth arrival and move-in, all new residential students participating in assisted new student move-in (August 22-24) must register for and print a move-in pass. The move-in pass must be displayed on the dashboard of your vehicle during move in.

Your student needs to select a move-in date and shift via the online Move-In Pass system.  Move-in shifts are:
  • Tuesday, August 22, 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.**
  • Tuesday, August 22, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.**
  • Wednesday, August 23, 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesday, August 23, 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Wednesday, August 23, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m.
  • Thursday, August 24, 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
  • Thursday, August 24, 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

**A small staff of volunteers will be available to assist you at select residence halls. Full assistance and move-in at all residence halls is available on Wednesday, August 23 and Thursday, August 24.

The Move-In Pass system opens on MySlice at 12 Noon EDT on Wednesday, July 19.  (No Move-In Passes will be issued before this date.)  There are a limited number of passes for each date and shift.  Move-In Passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis.  If you need to move-in on a specific date and time, your student will want to register for a Move-In Pass early.  The deadline to register for a Move-In Pass is 12 Noon EDT on Tuesday, August 1.

Please note:  If your student is participating in a special program requiring you to arrive before Tuesday, August 22nd (such as pre-orientation programs, international student orientation, athletic teams and the marching band) you do not need to download a move-in pass through this system.

Tips for a Healthy Start

One of the many responsibilities of new college students is taking care of their own health.  Encourage your student to eat well, sleep enough, exercise, and manage stress to prevent illness.

Here are some items that will be important to have available in case of a health issue:

Things to Bring for a Healthy Start

Take a look at the Health Services website to see what services are offered, what Health Tips your student can benefit from, FAQ’s, and to learn more about our new Health Services Patient Portal.

The deadline for incoming students to submit their health history and immunization forms was July 1.  However, there is still time to submit before your student comes to campus.  Students can access the patient portal at http://suhsportal.syr.edu  and use their NetID and password to log in.  Per New York State Public Health Law, all students registered for 6 or more credits must submit documentation of immunizations for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Meningitis A.  In lieu of the Meningitis A vaccination, a waiver form is acceptable.  The Meningitis waiver can also be signed using the patient portal.  If your student is under 18, please be sure to sign and upload the Minor Consent and Meningitis Waiver form.  Records must be received before students come to campus or they risk administrative consequences which include not being able to register for classes.

For questions about health forms or immunizations, email health@syr.edu  or call 315-443-9005.
Important Conversations
Talking to Your Student About Alcohol Use

Surprisingly, 85% of parents underestimate their own student’s alcohol use. 70% of parents underestimate how acceptable their own student believes it is to engage in various drinking behaviors. To learn more about starting a conversation with your student on alcohol use and abuse at college,  read more here.
