The Waysign

Church of the Wayfarer

Waysign  06.28.17

Welcome Pastor Luke !

The first sermon of a new pastor is an anxious occasion for everyone. You might be asking yourselves, "What will this new guy be like?  Will we grow?  Will things change?  Will he like us?"
Imagine what goes through the preacher's mind. "Where do I stand?  Where do I sit?  Will they like me?"
There is a significant difference between the anxieties though.
Remember the old joke about the chicken and the pig looking for a place to have breakfast?  They come upon a café with a sign in the window which reads, "Ham and Eggs, $1.99!"  The chicken says, "This place looks good to me." To which the pig replies, "Of course it would, from you all they want is a contribution, but from me they expect total commitment!"

Pastor Luke Ham will give Church of the Wayfarer UMC his total commitment! It is a humbling privilege to serve the church as an ordained pastor. One I have been blessed with for 41 years.  Despite our age and experience difference, Pastor Luke doesn't have "big shoes to fill." His job is to fill his own.

You know the definition of the "Perfect Pastor"?
"He is 35 years old and has been preaching for 40 years. He is always available in his office and is constantly out visiting his members. He is gifted with youth and the aged. He is handsome but not too good looking. He has a great sense of humor but is appropriately serious at all times."

That may be what we expect of a Pastor, but no Pastor, or spouse, secretary, teacher or doctor, for that matter, can be all things to all people. We all have different gifts and graces.   One of the best things about the United Methodist tradition of changing pastors is that each church gets to experience those gifts and graces in new and different ways. Each pastor contributing their best in new and different ways. All to build up the Body of Christ, dependent on God's grace not the personality of any one clergyperson.

Please welcome Pastor Luke and his family with the love and warmth you have shown Bonnie and me these past the years.

We all will be blessed as a result!
                   Welcoming A New Pastor

Being Invited To Things
This one may sound simple but when you are the new person in town you often don't know the culture yet that you are dealing with.

Pray For Your New Pastor and Tell Him That You Are Praying
There is something so reassuring to know that other people are specifically praying for you.

Love Him And Honor His Family
This can be done in so many ways. It is good to be reminded that when your new pastor arrives his family also arrives with him. This can be a big transition for both the pastor's spouse and also for any children they may have. They probably have relocated to a new place and job that will have many eyes watching them. Love them all and show them you accept them .

Retirement Party
With genuine thanks to the planning committee, to the Wayfarer Women, the Men's Breakfast group, and all the Wayfarer Nation (including those from Texas), the party Sunday to celebrate Pastor Mark's retirement was a memorable event.
Along with Ball Game hot dogs, purchased sandwich makings and donated salads, a large tray of fruit salad was donated by The Cottage next door and a large bowl of delicious quinoa salad donated by Jeffrey's. Many contributions were received for the Dr. Mark S. Bollwinkel Scholarship at Claremont School of Theology. For those who missed this opportunity, we have extended the time for anyone to contribute until Friday, June 30. Make checks to Church of the Wayfarer with the notation of scholarship.
Speakers at the luncheon from "afar" were: Linda Kelly (Reno), Sue DeFranco (Clovis), Ruth and Bob Gary (Twin Towers, Alameda), and Rick and Val Arnesen (LAUMC), all of whom recited fond memories and humorous stories about the Bollwinkel's ministry in their churches.
Many of the Wayfarers took the opportunity to also speak about their experiences with Pastor Mark and Bonnie.
Many Thanks!

Bonnie and I thank you all so much for your lavish "good-bye".  Your gifts to the "Rev. Dr. Mark S. Bollwinkel Scholarship Fund" at the Claremont School of Theology are truly appreciated.  The luncheon was wonderful!   Although together only three years we leave behind good friends here at Church of the Wayfarer and we'll miss you.

We have benefited greatly from the United Methodist protocol of space between pastoral appointments.   This one-year or so hiatus allows the new pastor to get established.  This means I will not be available to perform weddings, funerals, or to attend worship or meetings.  You've got a great new pastor and I want you to get to know him and his family.  But not to worry, we'll be living in the area and we won't be strangers for long.
Again, thank you all for your graciousness over these three years and the wonderful "good-bye" celebration!

We're adding a new tradition to Holy Communion Sundays.  We take the sacrament on the first Sunday of each month.  Remember to bring your donations of clean sox for the homeless men at First UMC, Salinas and donations of non-perishable food items for the food pantry at All Saints Episcopal Church here in Carmel.  We'll gather these gifts towards the alter as we receive Holy Communion, an ancient tradition of an offering for the poor as we ourselves receive God's greatest gift to us in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
