Mary Buckshaw Celebrates her 100th Birthday

At the July 11th Township Committee Meeting, Mary Buckshaw was honored by the Mayor, Township Committee along with friends and relatives in celebration of her 100th Birthday on July 23, 2017.
Mary Buckshaw, nee Galaini, was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 23, 1917 and moved to 5th Street in Flagtown with her parents when she was five years old. Mary married Stephen J Buckshaw, Sr. on July 24, 1938 and they remained happily married for 12 years until Stephen's passing in 1950. Mary and Stephen were blessed with three children, Stephen of Flagtown, Barbara of Flagtown, Mary Ann of Hopewell, six grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren.
Mrs. Buckshaw was employed at Ortho Pharmaceuticals for 31 years, has been active participant in the community for over 80 years and has been an active charter member of Flagtown Fire Company #1 Ladies Auxiliary since it founding in 1938. She is also a charter member of both the original Senior Club formed in 1974 and then later the Hillsborough Senior Citizens Chapter B, formed on July 1, 1993, with whom she has enjoyed many travel adventures. Additionally, Mrs. Buckshaw is a charter member of the senior dance group, the Rockettes and Rocket, and has performed with the group for more than 24 years. She enjoys playing her role as "Lady Liberty" in the annual Hillsborough Township Memorial Day parade and has recently played the part of "Lady Mame" in the Villagers Theater Senior Performing Arts Festival.
Mrs. Buckshaw continues to live an active life and attributes her longevity to "always being happy" and "never complaining."
The Mayor and the Hillsborough Township Committee wish Mary Bukshaw a Happy 100th Birthday and offer best wishes for many more happy days in the future to share with family and friends.

Hillsborough Township's Annual Fishing Derby and Family Camp Out - Friday, August 4th
Registration Now Open
"The Annual Fishing Derby and Family Camp Out will be held on Friday, August, 4th at Ann Van Middlesworth Park," announced Mayor Carl Suraci at Tuesday's Township Committee meeting.
"All residents are invited to the Annual Family Camp Out and are encouraged to pack your fishing poles for the David L. Thomas, Sr. Memorial Fishing Derby," added Mayor Suraci.
"This event is a summer highlight for many of our families in the Hillsborough," continued Mayor Suraci.
The Fishing Derby will run from 5-7 pm and the registration fee is $5.00 per child. The Camp Out fee is $10 per person and includes dinner and breakfast. Registration and additional information is available at the Parks and Recreation website.
"We look forward to seeing you all there," concluded Mayor Suraci.

Earlier this month, Mayor Carl Suraci, joined by family, friends and neighbors celebrated Hillsborough Community Night at the
Somerset Patriots game at TD Bank Ballpark.
The game was sponsored by Operation Shoebox New Jersey, a non-profit volunteer organization based in Hillsborough that collects donations of food and personal care items and ships care packages to US troops deployed overseas.
The Patriots wore commemorative USA uniforms with the Operation Shoebox New Jersey patch on the sleeve. Fans bid on the uniforms during the game to raise money for OPSHBX NJ.

Hillsborough Township Police Department Receives N.J. State Accreditation
3rd Consecutive Time - Only 8 Departments in Somerset County have received honor
Hillsborough Township Police Chief Darren Powell has announced that the Township Police Department was recently awarded the New Jersey State Accreditation by the New Jersey State Chiefs of Police (NJSCOP) for the 3rd time in as many cycles.

Mr. Harry Delgado, Accreditation Program Manager for the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police presented the re-accreditation certificate to the Township at Tuesday's Township Committee Meeting.
According to Chief Powell, "Over the past several years, department personnel participated in a thorough and rigorous self inspection of department policy and operations, generally the primary functions performed by the department involving administration, patrol, investigations, traffic, and training."

Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids
The New Jersey Legislature just passed a bill to raise the tobacco age to 21!
They also passed a bill to provide $7 million in funding to programs that prevent kids from smoking and help smokers quit.
You may recall that the legislature passed a bill to raise the tobacco age last year and Gov. Christie didn't sign it. Now, he has another chance to leave a legacy of better health for New Jersey.
The reasons that he should approve these bills couldn't be more obvious:
- Tobacco use is the #1 cause of preventable death in New Jersey, killing 11,800 people and costing the state more than $4 billion in health care bills every year.
- 95% of smokers start before age 21. If we can keep people from smoking while they're young, then most will never start.
- New Jersey currently provides $0 for tobacco prevention and cessation programs! Zero. $7 million still puts us very far below CDC-recommended funding levels, but it's a great start.
We need to make sure Gov. Christie knows this.

Opportunities Abound to Showcase Local Businesses at The Tenth Annual Rotary Fair
The Rotary Club of Hillsborough's annual Fair, scheduled for August 15 - 20 at Hillsborough Promenade, 315 Route 206, will once again provide local business men and women with multiple opportunities to showcase their businesses before thousands of residents from Hillsborough and surrounding communities. Over 15,000 attendees each year has made the Fair an unparalleled local venue to connect directly with customers.
"A wide array of local businesses and non-profit organizations ranging from karate schools to Yoga studios have taken advantage of this unique opportunity to meet current and prospective customers face-to-face," commented Ken Genco, a local Coldwell Banker realtor and the Rotary Club of Hillsborough member responsible for organizing the business venue at the Fair. "Not only do these businesses have the opportunity to build their customer base with local residents, but they are also supporting an important fundraiser that returns all proceeds directly to local community service organizations."

Sheriff's Office Reaccredited
Somerset County Sheriff Frank J. Provenzano has announced that the Somerset County Sheriff's Office was approved for reaccreditation by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police. The three-year accreditation renewal certificate was presented at the June 13 freeholders meeting by Harry Delgado, NJSACOP accreditation program manager.
Mr. Delgado made the presentation to Sheriff Frank Provenzano; Freeholder Deputy Director Patrick Scaglione; Col. Roy Gandolfe; Col. Richard Borden; Capt. Steve SanAntonio, accreditation manager; and Sgt. Michael DiGuilio, assistant accreditation manager.
"We are very proud of our Sheriff's Office and the high standards it maintains," said Freeholder Deputy Director Patrick Scaglione. "The accreditation process is a difficult and demanding one. We congratulate, thank and applaud the Sheriff's Office."
