Joan Benoit Samuelson and Yvette

Not too long ago, women running marathons was controversial.

Joan Benoit Samuelson changed that thinking with her gold-winning performance at the 1984 Inaugural Olympic Women's Marathon.

Introduced by SRLA senior Yvette, Joan Benoit Samuelson was inducted into the Court of Honor at the LA Coliseum earlier this month. Anita DeFrantz, a 1976 Bronze Medalist in rowing, was also inducted. They join just one other female Olympian (Babe Didrikson) honored at the LA Coliseum.
