Fall Internship Opportunity Intern
Help build our online community
Calling all social media gurus! Digital outreach internship opportunity
Canopy is looking for a creative, self-motivated, and energetic individual to help engage our friends and partners on social media.
Under the supervision of Canopy staff, the Digital Outreach Intern will prepare and publish content to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, and explore ways to deepen connections with Canopy's online community.
Time commitment is 10-15 hours per week for Fall 2017 semester, with the option to continue for multiple terms. This is a volunteer (unpaid) position, but a great chance to build experience and work with a fun, supportive team.
Is Your Tree Thirsty? Thirsty
Help your trees thrive this summer with water-wise tree care

It's heating up out there! Does your tree need a drink? Trees' watering needs vary, but a general rule of thumb during hot dry weather is to:
  • Water young trees every two weeks
  • Water mature trees once per month, or when soil is dry 12 inches below the surface.
  • Use 10-15 gallons of water per inch of trunk diameter (measured at "breast height" or 4.5 feet above the ground).
  • Mature native oaks are the exception! Once established (usually 5 years of age), native oaks generally fare better without summer watering, since the combination of heat and moisture can lead to root rot. Learn more about caring for native oaks.

You can check out Canopy's trees and water FAQ or download our Save our Water and our Trees brochure for more water-wise tree care tips.

Gretchen Daily
Stanford Biologist Gretchen Daily honored with Blue Planet Prize
In June, Canopy was thrilled to learn that our dear friend and local hero, Gretchen Daily, was honored with the 2017 Blue Planet Prize.
This prestigious award from the Asahi Glass Foundation honors "major contributions to solving global environmental problems."  Gretchen was selected for her pioneering work to highlight the profound connection between nature and human wellbeing.
As a cofounder of the Natural Capital Project, Gretchen has worked to create economic policies and systems that account for the value of ecological resources, incentivizing investments in healthy ecosystems. Her work has enabled over 80 countries to more fully integrate environmental conservation and human development into planning and management decisions.
Gretchen is also the author of The Power of Trees, an intimate and compelling look at trees' evolution, biology, and profound impact on our daily lives.

Stevens Creek Trail Tree Planting marks a milestone

On Saturday, June 17, Canopy was thrilled to team up with City of Mountain View, Mountain View Trees (MVT), Friends of Stevens Creek Trail (FOSCT), and over 175 volunteers to plant 87 new native trees along Stevens Creek Trail in Mountain View.
"This was a significant planting for several reasons," reflected Canopy Program Director Michael Hawkins.
"Canopy, MVT, and FOSCT all play a key role in sustaining urban nature on the Mid-Peninsula, but this was the first time we had a chance to join forces."
For Canopy, it was also our first major collaboration with the City of Mountain View. We can't wait for more collective efforts like this one!
Pruning at Willow Oaks

Tree care galore with summer interns and TUFs

After planting over 150 trees in East Palo Alto neighborhoods during the planting season, tree check-ups are a top priority this summer.
Last month, our Urban Forestry Interns Simon Willig and Lulu Sanchez began surveying newly planted street and yard trees, pruning as needed and chatting with residents about basic care and watering.
"For the most part, all the trees look really good," Simon reports. "One crape myrtle was in full bloom and the residents were totally excited about it."
Meanwhile, Canopy Teen Urban Foresters (TUFs) have been pruning up a storm at several local schools, where young Canopy trees are growing strong.
Lulu, who is overseeing the TUFs summer activities, reports, "They're really starting to get the hang of it!"

Rinconada Oak from Photographer Michael Light

In conversation with Photographer Michael Light

Through August 27th, the Palo Alto Art Center is hosting an exciting exhibit called Planetary Landscape, featuring the work of San Francisco based photographer Michael Light.
Canopy is especially interested in this project because it captures one of Palo Alto's iconic oak trees--a Coast Live Oak in Rinconada Park near Embarcadero Road--from a whole new perspective.
In celebration of the exhibit opening, we met up with Michael to learn more about his unique approach to photography and what drew him to the Rinconada oak tree as a subject for this exhibit.
sapodilla slices

Kicking off our summer travel series with something tasty to chew on

Have you ever heard of a Sapodilla tree?  We hadn't, but we got to try some of its tasty fruit, courtesy of Canopy's Education Manager, Natalie Brubaker.
In the first installment of our summer travel series, Natalie takes us down to West Palm Beach in Florida to meet the tropical Sapodilla.
Check back every few weeks for new stories of trees and travel from the Canopy team.  Happy summer!
P.S. Are you travelling this summer? Keep an eye out for interesting trees! We'd love to see your photos and hear your stories. Send to info@canopy.org.
