July 2017 DVOMB Monthly Minute
Board Updates

On behalf of the DVOMB and staff, we hope all of you are enjoying a fun and safe summer. This is a shorter edition of the Monthly Minute, but please do not overlook the Biennial Renewals for Providers and the upcoming training opportunities.

DVOMB August Meeting - August 11, 2017

With the cancelation of the July DVOMB meeting, the next DVOMB is scheduled for August 11, 2017. The agenda for the August meeting will be published later this month so please keep an eye out for more details.

Guidelines for Young Adult Offenders - Appendix K

Are you a DV Treatment Provider who has utilized the newly adopted Guidelines for Young Adult Offenders - Appendix K (click here)? If your answer to this question is yes, then the DVOMB is interested in hearing from you at the August DVOMB meeting about how useful this new protocol has been in working with offenders ages 18-25. If you are interested in sharing some of your experiences with the DVOMB, please contact the DVOMB staff for more information.

DVOMB On the Road Board Meeting - September 8, 2017

This is a friendly reminder that the DVOMB is headed to Gunnison in September of this year, so please mark your calendars. We are still finalizing details about this event, but we are hoping for those on the western slope to come spend the day with us. This meeting is part of the DVOMB's annual meeting on the road which is held in a different location around the state. This gives the Board the chance to connect with and hear from community stakeholders who may be unable to attend the monthly meetings that are held in Denver. This is a great opportunity to share successes and challenges that exist in rural or other parts of the state. If you have an interest in attending or would like more information, please feel free to contact staff for more information.

2017 DVOMB Renewal Application Season

This is effectively the last reminder that will go out about the 2017 Biennial Renewal Application Season before the deadline of July 31, 2017. If you are currently approved as a DVOMB Treatment Provider (including those in a "not currently practicing" status) and would like to continue to be listed, you need to submit your renewal application as soon as possible. The DVOMB staff is here to help so please feel free to contact us for assistance or any questions you may have about the process or requirements before the deadline.

Description:   This will be a 7 hour training divided into two-parts. The morning will focus on provider ethics in the counseling field by discussing how the NAADAC Code of Ethics and the ACA Code of Ethics can inform and impact domestic violence and sex offender providers. This discussion of ethical principles and ethical decision-making will also address the common complaints the DVOMB and the SOMB receive and the potential outcomes of complaints. The second half of this training will focus on clinical supervision and present on the different types of supervision, supervision skillsets, performance domains, documentation, and ethics. Clinical supervision is the crucible in which counselors acquire knowledge and skills as clinicians, providing a bridge between the classroom and the clinic. It is a critical component to improve client care, develop the professionalism of clinical practice, and impart and maintain ethical standards in the field. In recent years, especially in the substance abuse field, clinical supervision has become the cornerstone of quality improvement and assurance.

Trainer: Alan L. Cook, LPC, LAC

Training Hours Certificate: Participants will receive an ODVSOM training certificate for 3.5 hours for the Ethics Training, 3.5 hours for the Clinical Supervisor training and a total of 7 hours for participants who attend both trainings. Please note you must register for each if you plan to attend both training events.

Description:  This workshop will be focused on trauma-informed care for men who suffer from the effects of traumatic neurosis. The idea of trauma-informed care is being adopted more and more frequently by human services agencies based on increasing awareness of the ways in which trauma impacts functioning. We will explore and define what trauma-informed care is and ways in which a variety of treatment settings can be modified to increase the sense of safety experienced by consumers within those settings. You will explore how to incorporate trauma-informed practices into treatment with populations such as military veterans, substance users, men with psychological disorders, domestic violence offenders and sex offenders, among others. Our focus in this workshop will be the unique needs of men who experience traumatic events and how to individualize interventions for them.

Trainer: Trainer: Alan L. Cook, LPC, LAC

Training Hours Certificate: Participants will receive a certificate for 6.5 contact hours at the end of the workshop. This workshop has been preapproved hour for hour by NAADAC and the ODVSOM. Participants may use their certificate and other workshop materials to apply for continuing education credit from other licensing/credentialing boards.

Domestic Violence Offender Evaluation Survey
The Domestic Violence Treatment Provider Committee wants your input! We are emailing you with a request to fill out a short survey. This committee was charged by the DVOMB to begin looking at possible revisions for the DVOMB to consider regarding Sections 9.0 and 10.0 of the Standards. This committee, comprised of staff, Board members, and practicing clinicians in the field, has been exploring different options to improve these areas of the Standards. This committee would like your feedback before moving forward.

Qualifications to be listed as an approved DVOMB Treatment Provider is an important topic due to the nature of domestic violence offenders and the specialized skillsets required to work with this population. This survey asks questions about three different options proposed by the committee: (1) an Evaluator level of approval, (2) a specialized Evaluator designation, or (3) do not change the current system. Each of these options are intended to build upon the evaluation skills of existing treatment providers while alleviating some of the workload issues for treatment providers who do not have an interest in conducting evaluations. More details are provided about each option in the survey and you have the opportunity to let us know your thoughts.

While this exploratory survey is completely optional, it is important for you to participate given that this is in regards to the qualifications for approval. This survey is anonymous and confidential and the committee would like your feedback.
Please complete this survey no later than July 28, 2017 and we thank you for your time in advance.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact the DVOMB staff at any time. We thank you for your time and effort!
