"
Racial and Geographic Differences in Breastfeeding - United States, 2011-2015"
A recent CDC study published in the July 2017 edition of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
includes their analysis of 2011-2015 National Immunization Survey (NIS) data for children born during 2010-2013 to describe breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity through 6 months and duration at 12 months among black and white infants. NIS is a national ongoing survey conducted among households with children aged 19-35 months. Questions on breastfeeding were added to the survey in 2001 and have since been used for national breastfeeding surveillance. From the report: "
The difference in breastfeeding indicators among black and white infants by state continues to be substantial... To reduce the disparities in rates of breastfeeding between black and white infants, interventions need to specifically address breastfeeding barriers experienced disproportionally by black mothers."

CDC Releases Interactive Chronic Disease Indicator Data
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have announced the release of its Chronic Disease Indicators (CDI) data. The CDIs provide public health agencies with access to the most relevant, up-to-date, and uniformly-defined chronic disease surveillance data at the state level. The Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Weight Status category contains several breastfeeding indicators, including infants breastfed at six months, formula supplementation within the first two days of life, mean mPinc score, live births occuring at Baby-Friendly designated facilities, and support of onsite breastfeeding in state child care regulations.

ADVOCATE VOICES
Kimberly Seals Allers, award-winning journalist, author and a nationally recognized advocate for breastfeeding and infant health launches #FACTSNOTFEAR campaign
Kimberly Seals Allers and her children
"Finding a strength begets strength. You conquer a fear, there is another one you can surely defeat. I believe that because I lived that. I share this story with you because recently I have been involved in a very important effort to combat misinformation and fear mongering about exclusive breastfeeding. I have joined with my respected comrades at 1,000 Days to ask others in the breastfeeding space to raise their voices collectively to stand against a fast-moving threat to our work.  In April, we kicked off a   coordinated effort   to set the record straight on breastfeeding in response to the disinformation campaign organized by the Fed Is Best Foundation..." Seals Allers, along with 1,000 Days, and a group of like-minded breastfeeding advocates have launched the collaborative campaign #FactsNotFear. Learn all about the campaign and download graphics for sharing on Facebook and Twitter.
