Racial and Geographic Differences in Breastfeeding - United States, 2011-2015"

A recent CDC study published in the July 2017 edition of
Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report
includes their analysis of 2011-2015 National Immunization Survey (NIS) data for children born during 2010-2013 to describe breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity through 6 months and duration at 12 months among black and white infants. NIS is a national ongoing survey conducted among households with children aged 19-35 months. Questions on breastfeeding were added to the survey in 2001 and have since been used for national breastfeeding surveillance. From the report: "
The difference in breastfeeding indicators among black and white infants by state continues to be substantial... To reduce the disparities in rates of breastfeeding between black and white infants, interventions need to specifically address breastfeeding barriers experienced disproportionally by black mothers."

CDC Releases Interactive Chronic Disease Indicator Data
|
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have announced the release of its Chronic Disease Indicators (CDI) data. The CDIs provide public health agencies with access to the most relevant, up-to-date, and uniformly-defined chronic disease surveillance data at the state level. The Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Weight Status category contains several breastfeeding indicators, including infants breastfed at six months, formula supplementation within the first two days of life, mean mPinc score, live births occuring at Baby-Friendly designated facilities, and support of onsite breastfeeding in state child care regulations.

Don't miss the Seventh National Breastfeeding Coalitions Convening (NBCC) coming up on August 4-6, 2017, in Arlington, Virginia. The USBC is thrilled to convene this singular event once again, with a continued focus on enhancement of breastfeeding coalitions' capacity to implement The Surgeon General's Call to Action to Support Breastfeeding through policy and practice change, with an emphasis on racial equity and community engagement.
This year the redesigned NBCC program will feature skill-building sessions that interweave theory and practice of equity with coalition capacity building.

Black Breastfeeding Week Announces 2017 Theme
|
Black Breastfeeding Week (August 25-31) has announced this year's theme, "Bet on Black: Nourishing Our Families, Communities & Futures." BBW is making an all-in bet on black women, men, families, and communities to create the solutions for a solid future. One of the key foundations for that vibrant future is supporting breastfeeding. The BBW signature "Lift Up" events will take place nationwide on Wednesday, August 26. Visit the BBW website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts and follow the hashtag #BetOnBlack for more details. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the celebration.

Thanks to the continued dedicated efforts by Coalition members and allies in support of family health, well-being, and economic security,
SB 63 (Jackson) has passed out of the Assembly Labor and Assembly Judiciary Committees - the latter with bipartisan support! Coalition members are keeping up the momentum, meeting with and educating Assemblymembers in their district offices about the importance of job-protected leave for new parents. SB 63 had previously passed out of the State Senate on May 30th.
SB 63 is moving forward in the Assembly Appropriations Committee on July 19
th
. Advocacy works!

State Breastfeeding Resolution
|
It's coming, thanks to
Assemblymember Blanca Rubio
(District 48) and staff. We are just waiting for it to move out of Legislative Counsel. This will be in time for August, World Breastfeeding Month. The resolution will go to the Assembly for review and a vote. Resolutions do not need to pass both houses or go to the Governor.
