Call for 2018 Annual Conference Workshops
Got a great idea for a workshop for our 2018 national meeting? Heard something at a regional gathering or at one of our cognate partner's conferences that you thought we need to have at ours? Submit your proposal here

The theme for the conference is "The World Needs What We Know: Education, Research and the Future of ACPE."

The deadline to submit is August 31, 2017.
Considering Return on Investment (ROI)
Have you ever met with a CFO or senior financial officer to discuss the return on investment (ROI) of your ACPE program at your center? Last week, I joined 50 others (including 6 CPE certified educators) in Birmingham, AL for a workshop on determining ROI for spiritual care programs. The process resembles social science research, but the goal is different. In research, we seek to gain new understanding. With ROI, we seek to establish the monetary value of our work. I'd love to hear if you're interested and if you think we should provide professional development opportunities to support especially department directors in making the financial case for ACPE programs.
Clarification Regarding Area Managers
We have received several calls and question about how "territories" have been allocated amongst the new area managers. Katherine, Steve and Wayne will participate in making this determination over the next several weeks. Once we have clarified who will support whom and where, we will make sure to notify all of you. In the meantime, we continue to support the transitions into the new model. Watch this space for updates!
Mark Your Calendars
Please prepare for downtime the week of August 7-11, 2017, as we update our association management software. You can read more about what will be unavailable here.
A Poem for Reflection
Beth Newton Watson was one of six certified educators at the ROI workshop in Birmingham. During our second day, she shared the following poem/reflection/prose (I'm not sure how to best describe it) piece with me by Rumi. I expect many students may find some resonance with it, both those concluding residencies and those just diving into the heart of summer units:
"Cry Out in Your Weakness" by Jalaluddin Rumi

A dragon was pulling a bear into its terrible mouth.
A courageous man went and rescued the bear.
There are such helpers in the world, who rush to save
anyone who cries out. Like Mercy itself,
they run toward the screaming.
And they can't be bought off.
If you were to ask one of those, "Why did you come
so quickly?" He or she would say, "Because I heard
your helplessness."
Where lowland is,
that's where water goes. All medicine wants
is pain to cure.
And don't just ask for one mercy.
Let them flood in. Let the sky open under your feet.
Take the cotton out of your ears, the cotton
of consolations, so you can hear the sphere-music. . . .
Give your weakness
to One Who Helps.
Crying out loud and weeping are great resources.
A nursing mother, all she does
is wait to hear her child.

Just a little beginning-whimper,
and she's there.
God created the child, that is, your wanting,
so that it might cry out, so that milk might come.
Cry out! Don't be stolid and silent
with your pain. Lament! And let the milk
of Loving flow into you.
The hard rain and wind
are ways the cloud has
to take care of us.
Be patient.
Respond to every call
that excites your spirit.
Ignore those that make you fearful
and sad, that degrade you
back toward disease and death.
Something Extra
Most of my experience with drones has been negative: noisy, random, dangerous. But like most things, drones are not purely good or bad. So to balance my negatives, I offer the following positive use of drones - some amazing and beautiful photographs that we wouldn't have if we couldn't fly those little things over such places and things. Enjoy:  Dronestagram winners take photography to new heights
