Special thanks to Dr. Marianne Wolff, who will provide the Congregation with Torah and Haftarah introductions, and to Naomi Altschul, who will deliver the D'var Torah my absence. (Naomi will also lead/moderate the discussion in the evening!). And of course, thanks to Cantor Zim and to everyone else who makes our services run so smoothly. We are celebrating an aufruf tomorrow morning, and that means we'll be relying on the special skills and calm that Alan Stern brings to distributing all the honors.
And let's not forget our daily minyan and its stalwarts, especially Jeff Adler and Franco Aguilar! Please help sustain the minyan over these challenging summer months: M-F 7:00 a.m.; S-Th 7:45 p.m.; Sundays at 9:00 a.m.
Tomorrow afternoon Minha begins at 8:00 P.M
During the S'uda Sh'lishit, we will be reading the second half of a 2-parter: Little Chance for Harmony in a Region of Perpetual Conflict
While this may seem like a no-brainer, the article does provide a few important insights that make it more than worthwhile!

I thought that these 2 pieces would be a nice way to begin this week's Shab Sha!

Simone Veil-may her memory be for a blessing
I was privileged to hear her speak at the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Bergen Belsen in 2005. Here are 2 videos:

The Wall
It's now not just about the wall; its reverberations now impact on Israeli politics and the next Knesset election. You may also have seen something about the Chief Rabbinate's "blacklist". That is a sideshow, but it may contribute to an unraveling of Bibi's coalition, when taken together with the election of another neophyte, break-the-mold leader of the Labor party, and Bogie Ya'alon's looming challenge to Netanyahu for the leadership within Likud.
And I also have to share with you an astute observation by released American-Jewish Cuban prisoner Alan Gross, who spoke of Bibi's greatest expertise: " he's a brilliant man and the No. 1 expert in the world in terms of holding onto his job."
We'll just have to wait and see how it all plays out...
Please read on....

From my colleague on the ground in Israel, Rabbi Andy Sacks:

While this is the CNN main headline, Bogey also discusses his domestic policy differences with Bibi:

Last week's communication from RA President Phil Scheim made reference to the United Synagogue CEO, Steve Wernick who was on his way to Israel. Now we have Rabbi Wernick's report on his activities in Israel. Click here to read more

PINHAS

As his reward for his zealousness (in last week's sidra), Pinhas is promised by God that his descendants would be in the possession of the High Priesthood for succeeding generations. God also extends to Pinhas his special covenant of peace.

In preparation for the conquest of Canaan, Moses and Elazar are commanded to take a census of the Israelites to ascertain the number of males above the age of twenty eligible for military service. This census will also provide the basis for the division of the land among the tribes based upon their population. The total is slightly more than 600,000.

Since the apportionment of the land and all future inheritances are restricted to male family members, the case of the late Tzelofchad's five daughters requires special adjudication. The matter is submitted to God by Moses, who is then informed that daughters may inherit if there are no sons.

God discloses to Moses that his end is near. Moses' immediate concern is for the welfare of the people and he asks that a successor with certain qualities be appointed. Moses is directed to present Joshua to the nation.

The sidra concludes with a comprehensive description of all public sacrifices offered daily, weekly and on holidays.
