Dear Members of St. Brendan's,
Your Vestry has asked me to work with you and with them as Consulting Priest to consider your views on where our parish has been, where it is now, and where we might be headed in the year ahead. The Vestry has decided to set aside 45 minutes at the beginning of the annual meeting, (11:15 a.m. - Noon), on Sunday, July 30 for us to consider the following questions:
1. Where do you think we have been as a congregation?
2. Where do you think we are now?
3. What do you hope St. Brendan's would be like in one to three years?
4. What are some strengths as a congregation St. Brendan's could build on in the year ahead?
5. What important issues should we address in the coming year as part of a plan for parish renewal?
After the meeting, I will compile your responses and add them to those I've already received from the Vestry and will present them as a collection of "Findings" at a specially called congregation meeting to take place after worship on Sunday, August 13.
At that meeting, we will review those Findings, which will include parish strengths and parish issues that need to be addressed as we move forward. I will then, with the Vestry's approval, present a number of proposed goals designed to address those needs in the form of a "Parish Renewal Plan." If you as a congregation decide to adopt the plan, it will become the parish's "marching orders" for the coming year, focusing our common efforts toward accomplishing clear and measurable goals for the sake of renewal.
The Vestry and I look forward to your important participation in this process for the the future of St. Brendan's.
Fr. Edward Dufresne, Consulting Priest

From the Kitchen Committee
Your kitchen committee is working hard to reorganize the kitchen, following the departure of Dinner Is Served. We have cleaned out all of the cabinets, disposed of all the foodstuff that DIS had stored with us and rearranged some to work better for the Church use. One of these days, we will have labels for all doors and drawers!
Miriam Antich, Barbara Wright and Martha Dane did a yeoman's job polishing our cast iron stove burners, which had become quite rusted. We also plan to remove the large refrigerator that belongs to DIS and to reinstate our own refrigerator and our own freezer back to the kitchen.
Finally, Barbara Wright is working on replenishing our tablecloth supply, which seemed to dwindle for no apparent reason. Thus are the perils of renting our space. We are hoping the Vestry will allow a budget line for us in the 2018 budget so we can accomplish this, especially now that are building use rates are all updated, thanks to the work of the Building Use committee.
If anyone would like to serve on the Kitchen committee with us and join in the fun, feel free to contact any of those listed below. Thank you.
The Kitchen Committee.

Contemplation
There are many different ways to practice contemplation. Meditation, silent Prayer, centering Prayer, yoga, walking meditation or just focusing
on your breath are all ways to get out of your head and go deeper into your center. There is a long history of contemplative practice at St. Brendan's starting in the period when Cynthia Bourgeault was the priest in charge.
In recent years St. Brendan's has offered a time on Monday afternoons at 4:30 when we share a short reading or prayer and then sit together in silence in the sanctuary for twenty minutes.
During this time we are making ourselves open to God's presence. There
is something very powerful about sitting together in a group in silence. If you would like to learn more about contemplation and its importance in your spiritual practice, you might want to read Cynthia Bourgeault's recent book, "
The Heart of Centering Prayer" or visit the website of the Center for Action and Contemplation. They offer daily meditations and this month the focus is on contemplative practice. Click here to read the
Or you can just come and join us some Monday soon - all are welcome and no experience is required!

Scripture Notes for Sixth Sunday After Pentecost
In reading through the Gospel of Matthew, we now reach a section of parables told by Jesus to reveal the nature of God's Kingdom. This particular parable of the sower describes the basis for our growth in faith and ministry. We must be rooted in the Word of God. Our weekly gathering in Eucharist and our daily prayer and scripture reading are essential parts of this rootedness. We also meet Christ, the living Word of God, in ministry to the poor, the sick, and the neglected.
The first reading continues the story of the Hebrew people. Abraham is dead and Isaac is now head of the family. He has twin sons, Esau and Jacob. Esau, born first, was the heir but sold his birthright to the cagey Jacob, who will later cheat him out of Isaac's blessing, as well. Yet God will one day intervene and bring hope and redemption out of this scandalous behavior.
In the second reading today, Paul continues to elaborate on the nature of the new life we have received in baptism. As we live in the Spirit rather than according to the world (the flesh), we are discovering more fully that we have been adopted by God as children. Thus, we can count on God's faithfulness to us and on eternal life as his gift.
We gather to hear God's Word. That Word is not simply the objective written scriptures, however. Above all, the Word is Christ and our celebration centers on meeting him and receiving him, the Word of God incarnate.

Lord, I will trust you.
Help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.
Give me the faith to leave old ways and break new ground with you.
Christ of the mysteries, I trust you to be stronger than each storm
within me.
I will trust in the darkness and know that my times are in your hand.
Tune my spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make my obedience count for you.
-Prayer attributed to St. Brendan
