Parish Renewal Process
(Annual Meeting Agenda Item #1)
Dear Members of St. Brendan's,
Your Vestry has asked me to work with you and with them as Consulting Priest to consider your views on where our parish has been, where it is now, and where we might be headed in the year ahead. The Vestry has decided to set aside 45 minutes at the beginning of the annual meeting, (11:15 a.m. - Noon), on Sunday, July 30 for us to consider the following questions:
1. Where do you think we have been as a congregation?
2. Where do you think we are now?
3. What do you hope St. Brendan's would be like in one to three years?
4. What are some strengths as a congregation St. Brendan's could build on in the year ahead?
5. What important issues should we address in the coming year as part of a plan for parish renewal?
After the meeting, I will compile your responses and add them to those I've already received from the Vestry and will present them as a collection of "Findings" at a specially called congregation meeting to take place after worship on Sunday, August 13.
At that meeting, we will review those Findings, which will include parish strengths and parish issues that need to be addressed as we move forward. I will then, with the Vestry's approval, present a number of proposed goals designed to address those needs in the form of a "Parish Renewal Plan." If you as a congregation decide to adopt the plan, it will become the parish's "marching orders" for the coming year, focusing our common efforts toward accomplishing clear and measurable goals for the sake of renewal.
The Vestry and I look forward to your important participation in this process for the the future of St. Brendan's.
Fr. Edward Dufresne, Consulting Priest

Reminder to Sign Up Now!
Reduce your heating costs for next winter by more than 20% by purchasing and inserting transparent, insulating panels - that are now available for sale on island. These panels fit snugly into the inside of window frames, are light-weight, and inexpensive (approximately $25 each). WindowDressers reserves 22-25% of the inserts for Special Low-Income Pricing, available for up to 10 pine inserts per household per season. Once again this year. St Brendan's Outreach Committee has set aside $2,000 to help finance the purchase of inserts for low income households.
The window frames are produced by WindowDressers a non-profit Maine-based organization that has produced thousands of frames since 2012. The sale and assembly
of the windows is done by volunteers working in a Community Build. Appointments are made for trained volunteers to visit homes and measure a customer's window openings
at an agreed upon time as soon an order has been placed.
The Deer Isle orders need to be placed and measured by the beginning of August. The Community Build
will take place during the third week in September, making it possible for more seasonal folks to participate in the project. Inserts can make "shoulder" season use of a house much more comfortable and save fuel and money when uninhabited houses are heated over the winter.
In Maine, winter is a year-long event; we are preparing for, living in, or recovering from winter. Now is the time for 'preparing.' Jo Jacob is volunteer sales coordinator for this island program. Contact her at 348-6997 or [email protected] or Skip Greenlaw at 460-1260 or [email protected] to have your windows measured and
to answer your questions. You can find more information about this product at
www.windowdressers.org. For those who would like to view the inserts, you can visit St. Brendan's Church, 627 North Deer Isle Road in Deer Isle. on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoons, and measurers will have a sample insert with them when they come to take measurements for the frames .
Bringing community volunteers together is what makes this program work. There are many ways to help during the week of the build including unloading the truck load of building materials, assembling the inserts, cooking or baking something for one of the breakfasts or lunches, delivering completed inserts to someone who can't pick them up, vacuuming the hall each day of the build, doing dishes, making phone calls, etc. Everyone ordering inserts is asked to join other volunteers in this community project. News about signing up to volunteer will come out later in the summer.
Please call 207-596-3073 or go on line to: www.windowdressers.org to order
your window inserts now. This program is dedicated to warming homes, helping the environment and building community.

Scripture Notes for Seventh Sunday After Pentecost
As we continue to read the Gospel according to Matthew each
Sunday, we are in a section of Jesus' parables concerning the Kingdom of God. This parable of
the wheat and the weeds reaffirms God's patience with the Church. While we are often impatient
with its failures, God is merciful and waits until the end before separating the good from the bad.
Jesus urges us to grow into fruitful members of God's family.
The story of God's ancient people continues today. Jacob, the wily grandson of Abraham, is fleeing because he has cheated his brother out of the family inheritance. God gives him a dream in which God renews the promise to Abraham, whose heir Jacob is. This story illustrates that God does not choose people because they are worthy but out of the love and grace God has toward all people.
In the second reading, Paul assures us that the whole creation is moving toward redemption.Through our redemption will come the redemption of the whole creation. The whole creation waits with longing for our redemption to be complete.
We share in the Eucharistic action in order that God's redemptive power may lead us toward the Kingdom. We share also in order that we may be the means by which redemption comes to the whole creation. That is our vocation as the people of God and as members of the Body of Christ.

Lord, I will trust you.
Help me to journey beyond the familiar and into the unknown.
Give me the faith to leave old ways and break new ground with you.
Christ of the mysteries, I trust you to be stronger than each storm
within me.
I will trust in the darkness and know that my times are in your hand.
Tune my spirit to the music of heaven, and somehow, make my obedience count for you.
