Reduce your heating costs for next winter by more than 20% by purchasing and inserting transparent, insulating panels - that are now available for sale on island. These panels fit snugly into the inside of window frames, are light-weight, and inexpensive (approximately $25 each).  WindowDressers reserves 22-25% of the inserts for Special Low-Income Pricing, available for up to 10 pine inserts per household per season. Once again this year. St Brendan's Outreach Committee has set aside $2,000 to help finance the purchase of inserts for low income households.

 

The window frames are produced by WindowDressers a non-profit Maine-based organization that has produced thousands of frames since 2012.  The sale and assembly
of the windows is done by volunteers working in a Community Build.  Appointments are made for trained volunteers to visit homes and measure a customer's window openings
at an agreed upon time as soon an order has been placed.  The Deer Isle orders need to be placed and measured by the beginning of August.  The Community Build
will take place during the third week in September, making it possible for more seasonal folks to participate in the project.  Inserts can make "shoulder" season use of a house much more comfortable and save fuel and money when uninhabited houses are heated over the winter.

 

In Maine, winter is a year-long event; we are preparing for, living in, or recovering from winter.  Now is the time for 'preparing.' Jo Jacob is volunteer sales coordinator for this island program. to answer your questions.  You can find more information about this product at  www.windowdressers.org.  For those who would like to view the inserts, you can visit St. Brendan's Church, 627 North Deer Isle Road in Deer Isle. on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Friday afternoons, and measurers will have a sample insert with them when they come to take measurements for the frames .

 

Bringing community volunteers together is what makes this program work.  There are many ways to help during the week of the build including unloading the truck load of building materials, assembling the inserts, cooking or baking something for one of the breakfasts or lunches, delivering completed inserts to someone who can't pick them up, vacuuming the hall each day of the build, doing dishes, making phone calls, etc.  Everyone ordering inserts is asked to join other volunteers in this community project.  News about signing up to volunteer will come out later in the summer.
