TechPlace is now open! 
TechPlace officially opened its doors last week, welcoming almost 200 community members to an exciting grand opening event. 

"The vision for TechPlace revolves around the creation of energy between people and organizations; energy that drives economic growth through investment, talent, and collaboration," said Claire Green, Manager of TechPlace. "W e will reach beyond the borders of Burlington to build momentum and work towards attracting great companies to start and grow in Burlington." Green concluded her remarks by announcing TechPlace has accepted its first launch pad company, servicePath, who w ill be moving in this July.

Burlington Remains Family Friendly 
Statistics Canada released population age, gender and dwelling data from the 2016 Census Data in early May. The population data shows that since 2011 Burlington has seen its median age increase 1.2% to 42.3 years old. This means that Burlington is aging at a slower rate than Mississauga, Markham, the Region of Waterloo, and Ontario; but we are aging quicker than Hamilton, Oakville and Halton Region. Additionally, the dwelling data shows that Burlington's three quickest growing dwelling types are apartments (9%), row housing (3%) and single-detached housing (2%). All together this shows Burlington remains an attractive place to raise a family.
Burlington Business Directory Updated
BEDC is happy to announce that we have updated the Burlington Business Directory to reflect the 2016 Halton Employment Survey. This is an update from the original 2015 survey data used, which at the time was the most recent data. We have also added information to allow for better understanding of the company's size by grouping companies based on number of employees. Ontario Centres of Excellence Can Help Burlington Businesses Grow
When it comes to industry-academic collaboration and helping small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) grow, Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) can be your innovation partner.  A good example of this is OCE's Talent Edge program, which provides support for final-year undergraduate students all the way through to post-doctoral fellows to work on industry-driven research and development projects. Talent Edge is open to students and recent graduates across all disciplines. 

"TalentEdge provides students and recent graduates with hands-on industry experience and provides industry with access to up-and-coming talent," says Julie Lukkarila, Business Development Manager at OCE. "It's a win-win."

Precision Record Pressing 
On May 11th Burlington welcomed Precision Record Pressing's new 20,000 square-foot vinyl record pressing plant to the community. This location can manufacture 3.6 million vinyl records per year and they hope to become the second largest manufacturer in North America with a future expansion. While the current space employees 40 people,  Gerry McGhee, president of Precision Record Pressing, plans on adding a second and third shift by the end of 2017 which will add an additional 60 employees.
