Bob and Mary McCurdy at the dedication of the Stackhouse Education Center (May 2016)

Robert McCurdy III
Dear Friends,
Life is about chapters. About five years ago, a wonderful man from an even more wonderful family came into my life here at Reeves-Reed Arboretum. His name: Bob McCurdy. During our first meeting, we chatted for probably two hours, sharing personal stories about our families, our dreams, our philosophies on life, and punctuating each story with laughter. Afterward, I walked him to his car and we hugged goodbye, and I immediately knew I had a new friend. Over the years, we've seen each other at least once a year or so, on his visits back to Summit from South Carolina. And again, laughter and stories were on the agenda for each visit.
Bob was also a trustee for the Mary Reinhart Stackhouse Foundation, a long-time supporter of the Arboretum. In fact, our education building is named the Stackhouse. Bob's belief in our mission, his love for the environment, and his positive spirit greatly enhanced our work as well as our goals for the future.
Sadly, Bob passed away recently and although this chapter of our relationship with him has ended, in the final analysis, it is love, respect, and our enduring friendships that determine our true strength. Bob knew this, and with his help, I grew to know this as well. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Staff of Reeves-Reed Arboretum, we celebrate our dear friend, Bob McCurdy.

Volunteers and Other News |
Volunteer Spotlight:
Francesca Jones, Education Intern
Francesca just graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and worked with the Children's Education Department this past month for her Senior Project. She was involved in many aspects of our busy late spring/early summer season, including preparation of camp crafts and activities. Her last week included hands-on experience as an Environmental Educator as she assisted with the first week of Elephant Tree Nature Camp. Of her time here, she says, "I cannot express enough how thankful I am to have experienced my senior project at the Arboretum. Through this opportunity, thanks to my mentors, Jackie and Lisa, I have learned so much about nature, education, and about myself."
Francesca heads to Muhlenberg College in the Fall. We wish her all the best!
