REFLECTIONS FROM FR. RICK

As many of you know, Mike Beam will be ending his 12-year tenure as St. Michael's Youth Minister on August 13th. I hope you are able to join us to celebrate Mike's new venture and to show your love and appreciation for his faithful service immediately following the 10:15 service on August 13th in Quigley Hall.

In the interim, I have appointed Greg Favazza (our Assistant Parish Administrator) to lead and oversee youth ministry on a part-time basis as we spend time with our youth and parents to assess their needs, commitment levels, establish relationships, and prayerfully set goals and discern God's vision for our youth ministry. Greg has a Master's Degree in Biblical Studies and will be ordained as a Transitional Deacon on September 9th.  God willing, Greg will play an important role in the long-term development of St. Michael's family ministries.

My hope is to build a Family Ministry Team that works collectively and in conjunction with each other in ministering to the faith and spiritual formation needs from childhood through high-school. Tiffany Stieger (Director of Children's Ministry), Melanie Olivier (Director of our Pre-School) and Andrew Walker (Angel & Youth Choir) have done an outstanding job in developing their individual ministries but also in joint-ministry. I envision our future youth minister as a part of this successful team that will help shape family ministry as a whole at St. Michael's.

All of this falls into place as we prepare to launch our new CHILDREN'S FAMILY SERVICE on September 17th at 9 am.  This 30-minute service is structured to reach the hearts and minds of children and families in College Park who do not have a church home and to invite them to experience the Good News of God's reconciling love through our St. Michael's family.

This is a very exciting time in the life of St. Michael's and I look forward to seeing all that God has in store for us!

In Christ's Love,

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we welcome and accept you, and we trust God to take you where God wants you in God's timing.  We want to be a safe place for you to experience God's grace, love, and presence with us. Welcome home, Beloved.
Holy Baptism Joy on Sunday

Proud parents Anna and Sam Provencher watch as their daughter, Sara Kathryn, is Baptized and anointed with oil by Fr. Rick at Sunday's 10:15 am service.

Thank you, Mike Hatcher,  for serving as our volunteer photographer from the pews with your trusty iPhone during special events at SMC!

Coffee with Fr. Rick

We know it is summer, but God is on the move at St. Michael's and has much in store for us as we move toward the fall!

There are many exciting transitions happening: Youth Ministry, a new 9 am
Children's Family Service starting in September, and an outreach opportunity to help serve those in need in College Park. So, on Sunday, July 30th and Sunday, August 6th after the 10:15 service, Fr. Rick will be in Quigley Hall to update us on the upcoming happenings and to answer any questions.

Your Gift Changes Lives

God has entrusted us with an exciting and transformative vision: As your church home in College Park, we welcome all people to experience the good news of God's reconciling love, build leaders, nurture families, teach the next generation, baptize new believers, comfort the hurting, feed the hungry, and support our local and global neighbors in need.

We unyieldingly believe that the most tremendous thing in the world entrusted to us by Jesus Christ is this life-changing mission. We are inviting you to invest yourself through the resources that God has given you -- your energy, your prayers, and your money -- in this work to which God has called us.

How My Jamaica Mission Trip Led Me Closer To God
By Beckett Stieger

In all my life I have never experienced a trip like this one. I guess you could call me more of a veteran when it comes to mission trips, this one being my fourth. But I've never had one of those trips impact me as much as this one did.
The first place I started to really feel God with me and feel close to Him was at a church that we attended our first full day there. Everybody was singing when we walked in and I have never heard such a deep passion for God through anyone's singing before. I could really just feel His presence in that small little room.
Later that day we visited the Manchester Infirmary, which was basically a home for people that couldn't take care of themselves. While we were there we passed out candy and read Bible verses to the people and it was so cool because many people we read to have entire chapters of the Bible memorized and started reading along with us.
After that day of amazing worship and service we began to serve God as His hands and feet and help the needy. Along with a group of other teenagers I helped a wonderful lady named Nora begin to put a roof on the house she has been building for five years. As the week went along we began to experience that sense of community that Jamaica is known for as many of Nora's friends and family began to come over and help us with the work. Helping Nora was an amazing experience, but my favorite part of helping her was our pre-work prayer and just seeing two drastically different cultures come together to serve in God's name. It was a really cool thing to witness.
I will remember this trip for a lifetime, from the friends I made from Jamaica and Chicago, the amazing nights of worship at "The Rock," growing closer with members of my youth group, and taking more steps along my walk with Jesus Christ. This trip is unforgettable and I wouldn't have traded it for anything.

My Spiritually Impacting Mission Trip To Jamaica
By John Bedell

When presented with the opportunity to go serve the Lord in Jamaica, I was initially excited, but a little bit nervous. As the time came to make a decision, I was ready to go do the Lord's work. When we arrived in Jamaica, I was ready to grow closer to Him by serving others.  Initially, the rain made work a little difficult, but we were still able to paint the interior of a pastor's house.
Day Two was the most spiritually impacting of all of the days, as we were not only able to attend a local church, but also visit an infirmary. At this church, many people were raising their hands with proclamations of "Hallelujah!" This was a refreshing sight of how open these people were to worship the Lord. This also served as a metaphor for how I should live my life, as it showed that it is important for me to be completely open about my faith, hence allowing me to show people the power of the Holy Spirit.
After this, I was touched on an even deeper level, when visiting the Manchester Infirmary. The people in this "house" were sickly elderly people who did not have the money to pay their medical bills. The saddest part about this was not the state in which these people were in, but the fact that nobody, not even their family members, would come to visit them. The look on these people's faces served as a reminder of how important our visit was to them. With candy and Bible in hand, I was ready to build connections with these people. Originally, I felt as if I was forcing the Gospel too much, but as the visit progressed, I felt the Holy Spirit take over, and I felt I was much more effective. Many of these people had favorite Bible chapters of which they knew every word. When I was reading John 3:16 to one of the men, he cut me off and said it aloud. What spoke to me the most was the dire situations that these people were in and the faith in which they had in the Lord. This reminded me that the problems I may think I have are truly nothing in the eyes of the Lord.
After this eye opening day I was ready to work.  One group built a playground at a local school and the other group, my group, was laying concrete on a woman's house. At this worksite, we made concrete and then proceeded to lay it on the roof.  The process of making concrete was a very lengthy one.
After doing this for a few days, I signed up for a Vacation Bible School at a local school, within walking distance of the camp. We lead the kids in crafts, participated in Jamaican Bible Songs, and I was challenged to a race. This was a very good experience, as many of these children were very involved in their development as Christians.
Throughout all of this, we had worship sessions as a group, and individual "Quiet  Times" in which we studied Scripture. Both of these helped me to grow in my faith.
This experience was one of the most beneficial experiences in my life, as I gained a better understanding of the Lord and His abilities.  I am extremely thankful that I had the opportunity to go on this trip as it truly helped me to grow closer to Him, and experience all He is capable of.
