Christie Plans to Shift DMHAS to DOH
We still don't know the exact reason why Christie has declared his intention to transfer the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services to the Department of Health. However, his logic may be somewhat off-target. The Jacobi, Ragone, & Greenwood report frequently cited in Christie's
transfer plan never specificall
y stated that Divisions must be consolidated to accomplish the goal of integrating
treatment.
Their focus was on collaboration beween the Divisions and the elimination of regulatory boundaries, such as "requiring only a single
license for operation of an integrated facility."
There are now roughly 50 days before this transfer goes into effect, and the only way to stop it is a concurrent resolution from the House and Senate. This would kill the move with no veto option for Christie. With Trenton quiet for the summer, however, Christie's timing has left opponents scrambling. We'll keep you up to date as we learn more and develop an action plan.

North/Central Private Practice Group Celebrates its Founding Member
On Monday, July 10th the North/Central Private Practice Shared Interest Group (PPSIG) gathered for their summer luncheon to celebrate the retirement of Marilyn Baron, a long-time NASW-NJ member and original facilitator of the group.
Under the auspices of NASW-NJ, Marilyn started the PPSIG in 2004 and set the stage for private practice groups all around the state. On behalf of NASW-NJ, a big thank you and congratulations to Marilyn Baron!

New Medicare Cards in 2018
Beginning in April 2018, Medicare clients will come to your office with new cards in hand.
Medicare is taking steps to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards.
CMS will issue new Medicare cards with a new unique, randomly-assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) to replace the existing Social Security-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) both on the cards and in various CMS systems. CMS will start mailing new cards to people with Medicare benefits in April 2018. All Medicare cards will be replaced by April 2019.
