See You In Virginia Beach!
In just two weeks, we'll gather for BMSA's Summer Conference in Virginia Beach, and we can't wait to see you!

The registration desk and hospitality suite will open at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 27. If you're arriving on Thursday for committee meetings, stop by, pick up your registration materials and have a cold drink. Both areas will be open all day on Friday, too.

Friday starts with the always-popular golf tournament at 8 a.m. Topgolf, biking, kayaking with the dolphins, surfing and paddle boarding events kick off a bit later that morning at 9 a.m.

Our outstanding educational offerings start Friday at 2:15 p.m. Ken Wilbanks will present two back-to-back sessions: one on  Engaging Employees & Incentives and another one on Customer Rewards Programs. You don't want to miss what Ken has to share!

Afterwards, don't miss the Cheeseburger in Paradise welcome reception at 6 p.m. on Friday night in the Exhibit Hall.  The Youth parties will be going on at the same time.

Saturday morning, you'll want to start early with the BMSA Exhibit Program at 8 a.m. It's paired with a delicious continental breakfast.

After a morning of education with an in-depth economic forecast and an afternoon on your own, Saturday finishes with youth parties and the Chairman's Reception. You're invited to unwind and embrace the Margaritaville Mindset at the reception. After the reception, have dinner, dance a little and enjoy a casino evening.

Sunday morning, we'll finish with a special roundtable to discuss the joys and challenges of running a family-owned business. The discussion will focus on successfully navigating the future. We'll adjourn at 10 a.m.

Thanks to all our sponsors!  We couldn't do this conference without their generosity!  Thank you to - Culpeper Wood Preservers, Wholesale Millwork, BlueTarp Financial, Huttig Building Products, Pennsylvania Lumbermens Mutual Insurance, Weyerhaeuser, Cox Industries, ECMD, Federated Insurance Company, Smith Millwork, Rader Solutions, Dancik International, Madison Wood, Parksite, Amelia Lumber, Rocco, Vann Attorneys, LBM Advantage & TW Perry.

4 Secrets to Highly-Successful
Family-Owned Businesses

In 1968, Lloyd Bontrager developed a prototype camping trailer and unique lifter system for fold-down campers. With 15 employees on staff, he manufactured and sold 132 campers that year and Jayco was born.

Today, Jayco has more than 2,000 employees and sells more than 30,000 RVs each year. Its story is amazing, not just because of the company's growth, but because Bontrager died in 1985 in a plane accident, and so the vision of the company was left in the hands of his family. For 30 years now, his family has carried out the Jayco legacy. I recently interviewed the CEO, Derald Bontrager, to find out the secrets to running a highly successful family-owned business. Read more

Succession Planning: How
Everyone Does It Wrong

CEO transitions are risky times for companies. When the departing chief executive officer has had a strong run, there is worry about his successor's ability to maintain the momentum. When he has performed poorly, there's anxiety about whether, and how fast, his successor will be able to correct course.

In the current economic climate, CEO turnover can cause even greater tensions for both internal and external stakeholders - especially if some of them are blaming the existing boss for leading the company down the wrong path.

One reason it's all so difficult is because transitions historically have not been done well. When there's an internal succession, too often the outgoing CEO has had the largest - or only - influence on the process. He (or she) has too often made one of two mistakes, either choosing someone in his own likeness when what the company really needed was someone different, or choosing someone of lesser stature to preserve his own legacy.

When a board has been able wrest control of the succession from the CEO, it too often has instantly gone outside to recruit someone from another company. That is often an overcorrection. Very able candidates may exist inside. And they may present much less of a risk than an outsider.
