A Bias Opinion

Most of the characters in the J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels refer to the evil character, Voldemort, as "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." But there is one character, Harry Potter, who has the courage to say "the name" aloud.

Over and over again, Harry is quieted, scolded, and "shhh'd" for saying Voldemort's name. It is in saying his name that Harry claims power over "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named." Harry names the reality that others were afraid to name.

Perhaps the avoidance of naming reality should be called the "Voldemort Effect." It has more to do with the current reality of leadership in the local church than you might first realize.

Be A Disciple is a ministry of the Richard and Julia Wilke Institute for Discipleship at Southwestern College, a United Methodist institution in Winfield, Kansas.  Many of the courses offered are approved by Disciple Ministries and qualify as advanced course work in Lay Servant Ministries.

Developing Relationships Leads to Change in Local Churches

The Connection Blueprint is an innovative experiential learning process designed to help congregations maximize the impact of Jesus' redemptive and healing love in neighborhoods and congregations. It builds on the foundational value that developing relationships of mutuality with our neighbors will change communities and congregations. This 12-18 month journey will gather congregational teams of lay and clergy leaders from across the conference into a dynamic learning community. Together, they will learn and practice tools designed to assist each congregation to implement transformative ministry within their unique context, thereby allowing them to realize the dreams God has given them.
