New Ob-Gyn Project in Haiti

HVO LAUNCHES NEW OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY PROJECT IN HAITI

[June 12, 2017] - Health Volunteers Overseas is pleased to announce the launch of a new obstetrics and gynecology (Ob-Gyn) project in Deschapelles, Haiti. HVO volunteers will work with staff at Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) to increase surgical and clinical skills and knowledge of Ob-Gyn clinicians in vaginal surgery. Volunteers will also work with HAS staff to improve communication between Ob-Gyn clinicians and pediatricians at the time of delivery and to advance implementation of cesareans.

HAS is a rural, 131 bed hospital that provides pediatric, internal medicine, obstetrical, gynecologic, and surgical services, along with infectious disease and nutritional support. There are four dispensaries and outpatient clinics off campus, 70 mobile clinics and 225 health posts. There are currently two obstetricians-gynecologists, and three general surgeons provide additional cesarean coverage. HAS has 500 staff members (98% Haitian), and serves 2-3 million patients from Port au Prince and 350,000 patients from the lower Artibonite Valley in Western Haiti.

HVO volunteers will work with Ob-Gyn clinicians to improve skills and knowledge by providing lectures and clinical training in vaginal surgery, fetal monitoring, ultrasound, laparoscopy and vesicovaginal fistula repair. Volunteers will also provide lectures on how to improve communication and teamwork with pediatricians and improve implementation of cesareans, as well as improve communication and implementation of high-risk pregnancy protocols and cervical cancer screenings.

HVO’s Ob-Gyn projects are supported by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) .

VOLUNTEER
Volunteers must be board certified/eligible generalist obstetricians/gynecologists, with a minimum of 4 years experience with a current US license. Academic experience is helpful, but not required. Assignments to HAS are 2-4 weeks .
