'Know Your Limit' Program Returns June 29
For many, it's common knowledge that the legal blood alcohol limit for operating a motor vehicle in the state of California is less than .08 percent.  However, many might not realize how much alcohol, or more importantly, how little alcohol it takes to get to .08 percent or more. That is why the Folsom Police Department launched the Know Your Limit program in 2016. The program is designed to raise awareness of how little alcohol it takes to have a .08 percent blood-alcohol content, which would get you arrested for driving under the influence. On Thursday, June 29, a team of Folsom Police Department officers will spend an evening walking Folsom's various entertainment districts asking volunteers to be checked with a portable breathalyzer. Volunteers are asked what they believe their blood alcohol limit is currently, and if they feel they'd be safe to drive a car. They then blow into a breathalyzer in front of their friends. The program isn't intended as a scare tactic. Instead, it's designed to provide an educational opportunity within the Folsom community to encourage groups to designate a sober driver and make good choices. Learn more.
Fireworks Safety Tips
Fourth of July fireworks are a favorite Folsom tradition, but did you know that more fires are reported on this day than on any other day of the year in the United States? Nearly half of these fires are caused by fireworks. The good news is you can enjoy the festivities and fireworks with just a few simple safety tips:
  • Be sure to purchase "Safe and Sane" fireworks that bear the State Fire Marshal's seal. If fireworks explode or leave the ground, it is illegal in California.
  • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
  • Read and follow all directions.
  • When using legal fireworks, only set them off outdoors, in a clear area, away from homes, dry leaves, or grass and other flammable materials.
  • Supervise children and be sure other people are out of range before lighting.
  • Always have a bucket of water for disposal of fireworks, and a hose connected to water in case of fire.
  • Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
  • Know that use of fireworks on all bike trails and open spaces in thecity is prohibited.
  • Use of fireworks in the city's parks is discouraged and regulated by city ordinance #1052.

Tree Care Tips
Many residents have planted new trees to replace those lost in the drought. City of Folsom Arborist Ken Menzer offers the following tree care and staking tips to help your new trees thrive. Though most trees come attached to a stake, it's only intended to stabilize the tree on the trip home from the nursery. Once planted in your yard, most trees do not require any staking. Long-term staking or staking a tree without allowing for movement creates a weak tree. Only stake a tree that's in danger of falling over. Summer breezes are good for young trees, helping them to grow stronger and better able to withstand stormy winter weather. If you determine that your tree needs to be staked, place two stakes made of untreated wood 18 inches away from the trunk. Put the stakes perpendicular to the direction that the wind typically moves through your yard so that the tree is blown away from the stake. Attach up to four soft tree ties to the stakes to stabilize the tree trunk but still allow it to move with the breeze. Trim the stakes so that they're no more than 2 inches above the highest tree tie. Stake a tree for the shortest time possible and generally no longer than a year. Visit the City of Folsom website for more information about tree care.

Save a Buck!
Visit the Folsom Zoo Sanctuary this month and save on admission fees. Starting July 1, the Zoo Sanctuary's admission fees will increase by $1 per age category. This increase will help offset the rising costs of food, veterinary care, and other supplies for the animals. The Zoo Sanctuary is located at 403 Stafford Street; summer hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Make sure to stop in and visit new animal resident Davey the black-tail deer and all of the other amazing animals.
