Letter from the President

Dear Friends of the Rep,

My name is Chris McAnall and I've been enjoying the magic of live theatre at the Rep since I was a child. Starting in the fall of 2015 however, I began volunteering my time here to give back to the place that has entertained me so much over the years, serving on the board of trustees and the education committee. I'm now privileged and honored to have the opportunity to serve you as the president of the board.

I'm also happy to announce some more recent recognition that we've received, including the 2017 Best of Toledo Award in the "Performing Arts Theater" category from the Toledo Award Program and Runner-Up for the Family Favorites Awards in the "Best Kids Theatre Classes" category from the Toledo Area Parent. For those who voted for the Rep, thank you for your support!

Things are as busy as ever right now, with our energetic teen production of the Tony Award-winning hit,  Hairspray, opening this weekend,  July 13-16. This cast is extremely talented and you won't want to miss this musical - opening night is already sold out!

From  August 3-6, our younger actors will be presenting the charming and whimsical musical,  A Year with Frog and Toad, based upon the famous children's books by Arnold Label. It's truly a show that all ages will enjoy.

In between musicals, we have two week long theatre camps coming up for kids, ages 7-16. Our "Enchanted Theatre" camp runs  July 17-21, while our "Broadway Apocalypse" camp is  July 24-28. If these themes interest you, just note that spaces are filling up fast for both. Additional information and registration are available on our website at  www.toledorep.org.

Last but not least, we'll soon be going into our 85th Season with the thrilling musical,  Bonnie & Clyde. As president, I'll be doing all I can to assist our artistic director, staff, and countless production crew and volunteers in making this season truly worthy of its milestone anniversary. In addition to your hopeful attendance in the audience, if you'd like to contribute in any way, whether joining a production, volunteering, making a financial contribution, or even simply with some words of advice, we always welcome your support.

I look forward to serving you.
Christopher A. McAnall

Human Error
by Eric Pfeffinger
(Special Event)
November 17, 18 (two shows) & 19, 2017

A world premiere production by local playwright Eric Pfeffinger. This contemporary comedy-set right here in Toledo, Ohio-is full of warmth, heart, and outrageous humor. Through a medical mix-up, two couples (one red state-ish, the other blue) meet and have a kind of cultural exchange, reminding themselves, and the audience, that while much divides us, there is a large territory of common ground. Winner of the 2016 Ohio Arts Council Award for Individual Excellence.

A Christmas Carol
by Charles Dickens, revised by David Jex and Debra Ross Calabrese
December 1, 2 & 3, 2017

A Toledo Rep tradition for more than 30 years, this timeless tale of redemption follows Ebenezer Scrooge as he is transformed by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Future from a miserly old curmudgeon into a man who embodies the true meaning of Christmas. With lavish costumes, spectacular sets and a musical score rich with carols of the era, this production is one you will not want to miss!

Ripcord
by David Lindsay-Abaire
January 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27 & 28. 2018

A biting new comedy from Pulitzer Prize-winning author David LindsayAbaire. The sunny room on an upper floor is prime real estate in the Bristol Place Senior Living Facility, so when the cantankerous Abby is forced to share her quarters with new-arrival Marilyn, she has no choice but to get rid of the infuriatingly chipper woman by any means necessary. A seemingly harmless bet between the old women quickly escalates into a dangerous game of one-upmanship that reveals not just the tenacity of these worthy opponents, but also deeper truths that each would rather remain hidden.

Photograph 51
by Anna Ziegler
March 9, 10, 16, 17, 18, 22, 23, 24 & 25, 2018

A moving portrait of British scientist Rosalind Franklin, one of the great female scientists of the twentieth century, and her fervid drive and often overlooked role in the discovery of DNA's double helix structure. This complex tale explores how a group of chemists and biologists raced to map the molecular structure of our genetic code, revealing the unsung achievements of this trail-blazing, fiercely independent woman. Winner of the 2016 WhatsOnStage Award, Photograph 51 is a fascinating play about science, ambition, isolation, the unique challenges of a woman operating in a field dominated by men, and the race for greatness.

Sweet Charity
by Neil Simon, Cy Coleman, & Dorothy Fields
June 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 & 17, 2018

Have you ever known a girl who wanted something so badly that she tried too hard to get it? Meet Sweet Charity, who sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through romances. Her world is the all too real world of Times Square, and the people who pass through are as deceptively charming a group as ever swept across any stage. With a book by the king of comedy Neil Simon, this five-time Tony Award winner includes the iconic musical numbers "Big Spender", "If My Friends Could See Me Now", and "I'm a Brass Band".

SEASON BONUS!

Winner of three Tony Awards in 2011 and the basis of an Emmy Award-winning HBO film adaptation in 2014.

The Children's Hour
by Lillian Hellman
April 13 & 14, 2018

Hellman's trailblazing 1934 drama is set in an all-girls boarding school run by two best friends, Karen and Martha. When a vindictive student starts a rumor that the two women are lovers, local tongues wag and the truth becomes murkier. The accusation proceeds to destroy the women's careers, relationships and lives.

The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told
