Events at the Library
|
Access our
online events calendar to view the monthly schedule of programs at the Library, including these upcoming events:
- Being Mortal Documentary and Discussion: On Friday, June 30, at 10 a.m., attend a screening of the PBS documentary "Being Mortal," based on the book of the same name by Atul Gawande, MD. After the screening, audience members can participate in a guided conversation about the steps in identifying and communicating end-of-life goals and preferences. The program is underwritten by the John and Wauna Harman Foundation and presented through a partnership with Accord Hospice, Rotary Club of Sedona, and the Library.
- Poetry Readings: Join us for Pumphouse Poetry and Prose Project events in June and July, featuring local poets reading their works. These free readings are scheduled for Friday, June 30, at 5 p.m., and Friday, July 28, at 5 p.m. At the June 30 event, local artist, poet, and musician Wendy Harford will open the show with a song, followed by a spoken-word performance from poetry slam champion Joshua Wiss.
- Mental Health First Aid Training: This all-day training event will take place on Friday, July 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Class size for this free program is limited; please register by contacting Barbara Litrell of the Mental Health Coalition Verde Valley at 928-649-0135 or [email protected]. Participants need to provide their own lunch.
- Windows 10 Computer Class: The Library will be offering a Windows 10 computer class on Tuesday, July 25, from 10:30 a.m. to noon in the Quiet Study Room. Topics will include basic computer skills and Windows 10 navigation and file management. The Windows 10 environment will be demonstrated on the Library's SmartBoard, and participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops. Donor Spotlight
|
This month's donor spotlight is on the Friends of the Sedona Library.
In 1967, the Friends incorporated with the mission to "support the Sedona Public Library and enhance the Library's resources." Now, after 50 years, we congratulate them on their new Friends of the Library bookstore. Within a small house the Library has provided to them, the Friends have established a well-stocked, year-round book sale. "We've been very successful this first month," says Mary Snyder, FOL president. "If we see this level of success in the dog days of summer, we're hopeful that fall and winter will be even busier!"

From June 28 through July 3, the bookstore will have a half-price sale! So come on over to the Friends bookstore, in the house adjacent to the main library, where you can buy used books, for half of the already discounted price! Stock up on books and support Sedona Public Library at the same time! Thank you, Friends, for 50 years of support!

Youth Services Events in July
|
Many children have added reading and going to the Library to their list of favorite things to do this summer. Join in the fun and treat yourself to a free library event. Here are a few upcoming highlights:
- Summer Songs with Annette. All ages, from toddlers to seniors, are invited to laugh, sing, and wiggle to the music in the community room on Thursday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m.

 Puppet Show. Learn about non-violent communication with three goats and the Birdhouse Theatre Troupe! Fun for the whole family on Wednesday, July 12, at 6 p.m.
- Juggling Show. An unbelievable juggling show starts at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 29, followed by a summer celebration with dancing, prize drawings, and healthy snacks for kids!
- A family movie plays every Monday in July at 1 p.m.
- Story time and an art activity happen every Saturday at 11 a.m. in the children's room.
- Sedona Youth Theatre Workshop starts on Tuesday, July 11, and ends Saturday, July 22, with a performers showcase. Call the Library for more information: 928-282-7714, ext. 119.

Bring the Tree to Full Bloom!

 Only 26 more leaves are needed to complete the beautiful Grandchildren's Tree display at the Library, which honors children, literacy, and the love of reading. When you purchase a gold, silver, or bronze leaf, you join hundreds of other families who have invested in your public library and made the tree sparkle.

Adult Summer Reading Program Continues in July
|
Although July is already here, there's still plenty of time to join the adult summer reading program. You can register online anytime through July 17 by visiting the Library's homepage, www.sedonalibrary.org, and clicking the Summer Reading button. Or you can ask for personal help from one of the reference librarians. Participating is easy: all you have to do is read (books, magazines, books on tape, etc.) and log your reading activity.
Participants have already won raffle prizes, including gift certificates for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and 89Agave restaurant, as well as a power saw from Builders FirstSource and a beautiful piece of jewelry from Ramsey's Rocks and Minerals. Five more drawings will be held in July; winners will receive prizes from Hummingbird House, Picazzo's Pizza, Starbucks, the Sedona International Film Festival, and Cleaner Quicker Car Wash. On August 1, all adult summer readers are invited to an ice cream social at the Library to celebrate our freedom to read.

StoryWalk Reading and Walking Path
|
StoryWalk is an initiative to encourage people of all ages to get out and walk while enjoying children's books.
Join us for Sedona Public Library's StoryWalk kick-off event on Wednesday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m., when Mayor Moriarty will lead the first walk through the pages at Sunset Park!

Movies in July
|
Join us for a free movie, every Monday evening in July. Screenings start at 6 p.m. in the community room.
- July 3: Everybody Loves Somebody, a bilingual romantic comedy about a Mexican-American doctor who must choose between an old love and a new one.
- July 10: The Sense of an Ending, adapted from Julian Barnes's novel about a man who must confront long-buried secrets from his past.

 July 17: The Zookeeper's Wife, the real-life story of two Warsaw zookeepers who collaborate with the Resistance to save Jews from the Nazis.
- July 24: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, about a band of Rebel Alliance fighters who try to steal the plans for the Death Star.
- July 31: Norman, starring Richard Gere as a small-time wheeler dealer who makes a golden connection when a politician he once befriended becomes Israel's prime minister.

Board of Trustees Update

Sedona Public Library's Board of Trustees announces changes to the library Board. The all-volunteer Board of Trustees is responsible for administering the affairs of this nonprofit community organization that provides the services of a public library through contracts with local government.

Now you can power up at SPL-V! We recently purchased a new Power Hub with eight charging ports, two outlets, and two USB ports. Patrons and visitors can use this technology to charge and power phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices. This purchase was funded by the Arizona State Library, Archives & Public Records, a division of the Secretary of State, with federal funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
SPL in the Village is at Suite 51 A in Bell Rock Plaza. Library hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please call 928-284-1603 for more information.

 You have access to a free e-book collection with no wait lists, due dates, or checkout limits?
Reading Arizona is an e-book service provided by the Arizona State Library that offers hundreds of titles on Arizona topics. Most of the books are about nonfiction subjects, but the collection includes fiction too, including mysteries and children's books.
To access e-books from this collection, visit the Reading Arizona website at www.readingarizona.org. You can also browse the Reading Arizona collection through Sedona Public Library's catalog by searching for "Reading Arizona" (with quotes) in the catalog search field. Click on a "View This Content on Biblioboard" link to access a title of your choice.
