, November 8-11, 2017, in San Antonio, Texas! This conference, presented by title sponsor Purina, is the premier event in equine-assisted activities and therapies, and we are excited about the excellent educational sessions the conference offers (50 sessions divided into five tracks).
There is no better or faster way to earn your continuing education units (CEU) for instructor compliance than at the annual conference. In the registration book, each session is marked with the type of CEU earned, whether general continuing education (CE), core requirement (CR) or disability education (DE).

We Want Your Videos!
Gain notoriety and bragging rights by showing conference attendees the great time had by all at your center. This was a huge hit last year! The conference host committee will judge and select the top videos to show throughout the conference. We aren't looking for promotional videos, but rather the videos that highlight your center's staff, instructors, participants and equines having a great time. Email your videos to Cher Smith. For larger video files, mail a CD or flashdrive, or email Cher for Dropbox instructions. Note: We need the actual video, not a YouTube or Vimeo link. Submissions must be sent by September 15 to allow time for judging. Please include a photo/video release form with submission. And have fun!

The Case for Treeless Saddles

About 15 years ago I had the opportunity to help a friend condition her endurance horses. She saddled up her Arab for my first conditioning ride with her treeless saddle, and we headed out for more than two hours of trail riding, mostly at a trot on "technical" trails, meaning there were hills and hairpin turns and varied terrain. At that point, I had never ridden a horse who was physically conditioned for such rigorous work, and I surely was not conditioned for it myself, spending most of my time as director and instructor at a therapeutic riding program. That first conditioning ride was enlightening. Over the ensuing months as I conditioned her horses two or three times a week, I noticed how much I liked the treeless saddle: it was very light weight and extremely comfortable to ride for long distances (culminating in my first 50 mile endurance ride six months later). Right away, too, I noticed how I could feel every little movement of the horse under me, encouraging a great sense of oneness.

Research on Autism and Equine-Assisted Interventions

The manuscript "Autism and Equine-assisted Interventions: A Systematic Mapping Review" has been published in the Journal of Autism and Development Disabilities. This research was conducted by B. Caitlin McDaniel Peters and Wendy Wood of the Temple Grandin Equine Center. Click here to view an online version of the paper.
Individuals on the autism spectrum make up the largest demographic of those receiving services at PATH Intl. Member Centers. (Click here to view the most current PATH Intl. Fact Sheet.) Continued research on the efficacy of equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) is necessary and welcomed.
