One of the Largest Funders for Local Nonprofits Approves Funding for the Next Two Years
Spokane County United Way is a sustainable funding source for local nonprofit programs. On June 28, 2017 our Board of Directors recommended investments for 32 programs.  Two of these investments are with collaborative programs - Hillyard Youth Collaborative and  YouthReach. Spokane County United Way has funded these collaborations for a few years and is now the largest funder for the Hillyard Youth Collaborative. Both of these collaborations have partners working to improve life outcomes for area youth who are really struggling and it is attracting other funders to support their efforts.

The programs funded by Spokane County United Way work toward  a vision to: increase high school graduation rates for low-income and minority students; decrease the countywide rates of domestic violence and child abuse and neglect; and improve the financial stability for those struggling to make ends meet. The funding recommendations made to the Board considered the alignment of programs towards the stated vision, their desire to build greater collaboration among our partners and the need to focus on equity and targeted populations.

We would like to sincerely thank our 47 Investment Process Volunteers that reviewed agency applications, met with the nonprofit leaders and worked towards quality measurements and data tracking. These volunteers are integral to our work and our community.

The input from the 47 volunteers was used by the United Way Board's Community Impact Committee in their funding recommendation that the Board of Directors accepted.

We value the strength of this process, the quality of our local nonprofit partners, the dedication of our volunteers and our community's commitment to create a healthier, more educated and prosperous community.

Collaborative Efforts and System Change Create Impact

Spokane County United Way is in an unique position to bring local nonprofit partners together. Through our close partnerships and our funding process, we are able to align and create opportunities to coordinate efforts for our community. Camp Fire Inland Northwest and Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center worked with us to combine their efforts to improve the quality of summer programming for local youth.

Due to this collaboration youth attending Martin Luther King, Jr. Family Outreach Center (MLK) for the summer have an opportunity to attend a week-long day camp at Camp Dart-Lo, a program of Camp Fire Inland Northwest. The MLK youth now have access to something many of us take for granted: experiencing the great outdoors. They are able to attend day camp at Camp Dart-Lo with their peers and their group leader from MLK. This is a best practice that strengthens the experience and support for these youth.

This successful collaboration encouraged Camp Fire Inland Northwest to offer this opportunity to others. They expanded this opportunity to include youth at West Central Community Center; in the future using United Way funding they will include youth from the Southwest Spokane Community Center.
