Author Tim Tyson's autobiographical, National Book Critics Circle Award nominated, Blood Done Sign My Name, tells the story of the racial tension surrounding a 1970 lynching in Tyson's hometown of Oxford, NC.

Oakland Missionary Baptist Church, Ramseur, NC, to the Friends of Baptist Scholarship Fund during their Special Ministries Celebration Sunday on July 30.
President Vergel Lattimore was the guest speaker for this program. Dr. Arthur W. Waddell, Senior Pastor, (D.Min. '15) and the members of the congregation expressed deep appreciation for the D.Min. project that has had a positive and constructive impact on the pastoral care ministries focus of this changing congregation.

Ms. Kelly M. Bryant has joined Hood Seminary as Library Assistant/Writing Specialist.
In addition to assisting the director of the library with circulation desk procedures, research and technology issues, and other library programming services, Ms. Bryant will also devote significant energy and time in the Margaret H. Kluttz Writing and Resource Center with one-on-one individual writing instruction.
Ms. Bryant received a B.S. degree from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls (Major: English, Emphasis in Creative Writing; Minor: International Studies). She obtained a M.A. degree in Leadership in Student Affairs from the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis, MN. She brings rich and diverse experience assisting undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals with writing coaching and consultation. She has Tutor Certification from the College Reading & Learning Association (CRLA).

President Vergel Lattimore was appointed as Chair of the Leadership Development Committee of the Salisbury Rotary Club in July.
He attended the A.M.E. Zion Pastors/Ministers Retreat at Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church, Charlotte, NC, on July 29.
Dr. Lattimore was the guest speaker for the Special Ministries Celebration Sunday at Oakland Missionary Baptist Church on July 30. The Senior Pastor is Dr. Arthur W. Waddell, D.Min. '16.
On August 13, he attended the 150th Anniversary of the Bellefonte Presbyterian Church Church, Harrisburg, NC.

Dr. Mary Love participated in the 23rd Samuel D. Proctor Institute for Child Advocacy Ministry this summer at the Children's Defense Fund's Alex Haley Farm.

Dr. Don Haynes had brisk sales of his recently published book, Reading the Bible Again and Seeing It for the First Time, to Hood alums at the Western North Carolina UMC Annual Conference. He enjoyed autographing each one with a note about their student days at Hood.

Dr Dora Mbuwayesango’s updated essay, “How Local Divine Powers were Suppressed: The case of Mwari of the Shona,” was republished in
Postcoloniality, Translation, and the Bible in Africa,
(Musa Dube, editor; Pickwick Publications, 2017). She is also serving on the committee to elect Al Heggins for Salisbury City Council as co-campaign manager.

Dr. Ken Walden has accepted an invitation to participate in a 3-year study (2017-2020) entitled "Current and Future Directions in Theological Education" funded by the Henry Luce Foundation. The project will bring together innovative leaders and researchers in theological education for “sustained reflection and conversation on theological education at the field level.”
In June, Dr. Walden (pictured on the right) attended a gathering in Chicago with various participating professors and educational institutions.

HTS Faculty and Staff gathered for a productive and motivational annual retreat on August 10 at The Forum, Salisbury-Rowan Schools' beautiful new administration building in downtown Salisbury. Drawing from Dr. Carol Dwerk's ground-breaking book "Mindset: the New Psychology of Success," we explored ways to incorporate a "growth mindset" into every facet of the HTS seminary experience.
