Welcome to August!
I know some of you are back to work and others are still enjoying a few more weeks of summer. It's hard to believe we are already in back-to-school mode!
I had the privilege of attending several conferences this summer, collecting a number of best practices and new ideas and making some great connections.
The annual
American School Counselor Conference
was held this year in Denver with more than 3,500 counselors and educators from around the world together to learn, share, and recharge. Shout out to Hilda Majewski from Vista Unified School District and Jennifer Hauth from San Mateo Union High School District, who were there and reached out to have lunch together! I love meeting and talking with all of you. Next year, the conference will be held in Los Angeles and we need San Diego to represent!
Proposals are now being accepted
for 2018 conference presenters.
I highly recommend attending the
AVID Summer Institute
with your site team if your school is implementing the AVID elective course or AVID schoolwide. I have attended for the past two years and I learn something new every time. San Diego hosts two sessions each summer, so you wouldn't have to travel far!
And coming up,
I am super excited about the SDCOE
Equity Symposium
on Sept. 7 and 8 and the opportunity to learn and grow with some phenomenal keynote speakers and best practices. We are inviting school teams to attend and encourage school counselors to be included!
I love seeing you and your work in action, so please email me and send in pictures of your campus or district activities. This newsletter is an outlet to share resources and best practices, so let's keep learning from each other! As always, feel free to forward this newsletter to colleagues and friends who you think could benefit from this information.
May 2017-18 be your best school year yet!

Calling All New School Counselors
Are you (or someone you know) a new (or newer) practicing school counselor? If yes, then you don't want to miss the New School Counselor Institute, SDCOE's six-part series that dives into the skills and resources with which every school counselor should be familiar. Learning and Leadership Services and Student Support Services, two different divisions at SDCOE, are teaming up to offer this unique training. Past participants shared that they loved the activities, learned about new resources, and were grateful to know they are not alone in continuing to learn and grow.

Meet the College Board's New Southern California Representative
|
|
Southern California has a new College Board representative and she will be presenting for us on Oct. 13 at the UC-CSU-College Board Highlights Day.
Tacey R. Rodgers began her career in education working as paraprofessional in adult education while completing her undergraduate degree in English literature. Immediately after completing her B.A., she earned a master's degree from California
State University, East Bay, in English TESOL (Teaching English to
|
|
Speakers of Other Languages). Upon gaining her graduate degree and the
designated subjects teaching
credential, she transitioned from
assisting in adult education classrooms to teaching English to adult learners. She has taught learners at all levels of English fluency. She also taught in two Contra Costa
County school districts. In 2011, she began with the College Board, which serves California school districts in supporting their goals to provide more college-going
opportunities to all students. In June 2015, she returned to CSU East Bay, working toward a doctorate in educational leadership for social justice, which she hopes to complete in June 2018.
