iLaw 2018 - Steering Committee Meeting

The first steering committee meeting for the iLaw2018: The ILS Forum on International Law will take place at Shutts & Bowen LLP, 200 South Biscayne Blvd., Suite 4100, Miami, FL 33131, on August 16, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. All members interested in planning the ILS's annual flagship conference are welcome to attend (the iLaw2018 will be held on February 16, 2018, at the Conrad Hotel). Please RSVP to [email protected] to ensure an appropriate headcount for light bites and refreshments.

UPCOMING DEADLINE - International Law Certification

The International Law Certification Committee of the Florida Bar would like to remind members that applications for Florida Bar Board Certification in International Law are due to the Board of Legal Specialization no later than August 31, 2017 in order to sit for the examination in 2018. Join the 53 lawyers currently Board Certified as an expert in International Law!

World Arbitration and Mediation Review (WAMR) Call for Submissions

The World Arbitration and Mediation Review (WAMR)  is pleased to announce a call for submissions of academic, professional and policy oriented contributions regarding the global and domestic dimensions of arbitration and mediation.   WAMR 's editorial staff is particularly interested in accepting articles, commentaries and reviews focused on contemporary developments, policy and academic debates, cases, recent legislation, theoretical and practical challenges related to the worldwide regulation and use of arbitration and mediation, and the field of dispute resolution in general.  
 
Submissions will be considered on a rolling basis, and shall conform to the following editorial guidelines:
 
  • We prefer original manuscripts (not previously published) but may under exceptional circumstances consider accepting revisions, abridgments or works originally published in other languages, as long as the author owns the copyright. Co-authored works are also welcomed.
  • We only accept the following types of works:
Articles
(10,000-20,000 words)
Commentaries
(3,500-7,000 words)
Reviews
(1,500 to 2,500 words)
Scholarly works on domestic or international arbitration and mediation that develop an argument, analyze a legal issue, and offer a contribution to the field.  May be based on empirical data, documentary evidence or any other sources.
Remarks, annotations or interpretations of a legal case, a domestic or international court judgment, arbitral award, new or proposed legislation, treaty or other international agreement, or policy related to domestic or international arbitration and mediation.
Appraisal and critique or commentary of a recently published (within the 12 months prior to submission) book, blog, documentary or other media related to domestic or international arbitration and mediation.

  • We only accept works written in Englishwith double-spaced text and single-spaced footnotes conforming to The Bluebook, A Uniform System of Citation (https://www.legalbluebook.com/).
  • Footnotes should be numbered consecutively, using the footnote function in Microsoft Word® so that if any footnotes are added or deleted the others are automatically renumbered.  The first footnote should include a brief biographical note with the author's current affiliation. Footnotes do not count against the number of words.
  • Article submissions should include an abstract (200-300 words) and a table of contents (not included in word count).  The front page should include the author's name and email address, as well as the title of the work.
  • Manuscripts should be submitted to [email protected] as an e-mail attachment in a Microsoft Word® file, with "Submission for Review_[Last Name]" as the subject line.  A member of the Editorial Board will confirm receipt and provide the author with an expected review-by date. Any other general matters concerning the journal should be directed to [email protected].
 
WAMR   is edited by Florida International University College of Law (Miami, U.S.A.) under the leadership of Professor Manuel A. Gómez as Editor-In-Chief, a motivated Editorial Board, and printed and distrbuted by Juris Publishing. This partnership ensures both the rigorous selection and academic quality of the journal's content, and also the timely production and worldwide distribution online and in print.   WAMR   also relies on a Board of Advisors comprised of prominent practitioners, academics, and other dispute resolution experts from around the world, which reinforces the significance of this journal as a premier vehicle for the dissemination of knowledge and information about the dynamic world of arbitration and mediation.

Job Opportunity at the University of Akron School of Law

The University of Akron School of Law anticipates hiring a tenure-track or tenured faculty member with a focus in the area of international and comparative law to begin teaching in Fall 2018.  We seek a candidate demonstrating general international law expertise with a preference for private international law, including but not limited to international business transactions, international trade, and/or international commercial arbitration.  Both entry-level and lateral candidates are encouraged to apply.  The appointment may include opportunities for administrative leadership overseeing study abroad programs, programs for foreign lawyers, and other international programs.  The committee is interested in candidates with scholarly distinction or great promise as demonstrated by strong early scholarship and a thoughtful agenda for future work, as well as a commitment to excellence in teaching.

Message from the Chair

Dear International Law Section members:                  
 
Welcome to the 2017-18 Section year!  It is an honor to address you as Chair and to highlight for you the exciting events coming our way in the next year. 
 
Thanks to the leadership of our Immediate Past Chair, Al Lindsay, and the tireless work of our leaders and committees, the state of the International Law Section is stronger than ever before.  As reported at our annual meeting, our finances and membership are healthy.  The quality of our new website, of our  publications, and of our CLE programs is commended throughout the Bar.  Our collaboration with other international law organizations, with other Sections of the Bar, and our legislative efforts make concrete our promise to make the Florida Bar International Law Section a platform for Florida's international practitioners to Lead Globally with Information, Innovation and Insight.
 
Our next big event is the International Law Section Retreat to be held on September 29 - October 1, 2017, at the stunning Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs, Florida.  Situated along the Gulf of Mexico in Southwest Florida, between Naples and Ft. Myers, the resort offers a multitude of amenities and activities including a secluded beach island, hydro-grid tennis facilities, 18-hole golf course designed by Senior PGA Tour Champion Raymond Floyd, a 19,000-sq. ft. full-service spa, a 5,000 square-foot lagoon pool with a 140 foot water slide and lap pool and six restaurants.  As with past Retreats we will do some work and a lot of socializing.  We welcome families and significant others and are looking for proposals for our second annual ILS Talks modeled on the TED Talks known to many of you.  Please be on the lookout for registration details in the coming days and be sure to contact us if you are interested in giving an ILS Talk.
 
Another feature of the coming year will be the International Law Section's outreach to our members and potential members outside South Florida.  Planning is underway for an event in Orlando in November and for other events in Tampa and Jacksonville in 2018.  If you are interested in helping with these events, please reach out to me directly.

Will the push or pull of nationalist sentiments affect where and how businesses resolve cross-border disputes? Might the relationship between national courts and arbitral tribunals shift? These and more questions will be topics of debate at the ATLAS - Atlanta International Arbitration Society 6th annual conference titled International Business Disputes in an Era of Receding Globalism. We invite you to submit your topics for articles to be included in the Fall 2017 International Law Quarterly, which will focus on international dispute resolution
 
Feature Articles should be 8-10 pages, double-spaced, and must conform with the ILQ's Style Guide (which we can send to you if you're interested in submitting an article).
 
The Fall 2017 ILQ will have between 10-12 Feature Articles, so please send us your proposed topic so that we can ensure that there is no duplication.
 
Deadline for articles is Friday, 18 August.
