Supporting First Responders and More with Community Education

paramedics
Day and night, those who answer 911 calls, EMTs, paramedics, and firefighters see and attend to car accidents, heart attacks, domestic abuse, home fires, gunshot wounds, and every kind of unimaginable accident, illness and death.

Because of support from people like you, last year, we met with more than 300 local first responders as well as staff at other organizations whose daily work involves the sick, dying and bereaved. "The Other Story of Ruth" - A Poem by Rhonda Richey

Rhonda Richey, a former participant in our "Healing Through Poetry" support group, shared her poem
"The Other Story of Ruth" with us about her mother, Ruth, who loved to garden.

We recently launched our new Shining Light Society to recognize those of you who have helped "shine a light" into the darkness for those dealing with a serious illness or grieving the loss of a loved one by donating a major gift or including us in your estate plans. A special reception was held last month for honorary members.   Read more in the Santa Barbara Independent.

Being surrounded by so many people who care about supporting the emotional, social and spiritual care needs of people dealing with death and dying was a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do. To be able to provide services to 1,200 people free-of-charge in 2016 and with a larger percentage increase so far in 2017, we remain ever thankful for the people who enable us to do so.

Volunteer Spotlight: Brian Silsbury

Our volunteer Brian Silsbury was recently featured in the Carp Coastal View. "One of the reasons I do this volunteer work is that I want to pay back society. I'm paying it back and perhaps paying it forward," he said. Read more about his experiences as a patient care volunteer in this article by Barbara Dunlap.
