Dear MANS Member Schools, Staff, Colleagues, and Friends:
The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) conducted a Webinar presenting new survey results on why parents choose private schools and what they're looking for when they do. CAPE commissioned this original national research to help private school leaders better understand the K-12 educational landscape so we can all work together to continue growing and promoting private schools across the country. Some of the interesting findings include:
- 80% of parents are very satisfied with their children's private school. Only 53% of public school parents are very satisfied.
- Millennial parents prefer Christian private schools over all other types.
- The most important factors in choosing a school are: safe environments, teachers who care, academic excellence, affordability, and college prep. Religious education was ranked as the least important.
- Cost and location are the biggest barriers to school choice.
- 75% of parents are willing to drive 30 minutes or less for school choice.
- 40% of parents would ideally send their child to a private school
- Top 4 reasons parents chooses a private school are: #1 better education, #2 discipline/structure, #3 individual attention, #4 class size.
- American school parents (regardless of school type) seek quality education, individual attention, and socialization for their children when choosing a school.
There is a lot of information to consider for schools as they seek to grow enrollment. This was a national survey so some of the findings may not add up to your local experience. As the beginning of the school year gets closer it would be interesting to see how MANS member parents respond when asked how they chose your school.

Microsoft Education Online Courses for Teachers
Michigan Virtual's suite of five online Microsoft courses range from three to seven hours each and aim to provide educators with an awareness of which Microsoft products may work in the classroom. Courses range in price from $15-$30.

Phenomenal Science
Twenty-one science units - an entire curriculum for Grades K-5 - that address all the Michigan Science Standards is available at no charge through Michigan Virtual. This free curriculum - called Phenomenal Science - is a regional movement supporting teacher leaders through professional learning and in the development of K-5 grade science units.

Michigan Virtual offers a variety of courses to support educators in understanding and embracing blended learning concepts. These courses include Designing and Developing in the Blended Classroom, Intro to Online Teaching and Learning, Teaching in the Blended and Online Classroom and Understanding Blended Learning for School Leaders.

Mentor Training
Michigan Virtual partners with school leaders and onsite mentors to cultivate a shared understanding of the fundamental elements of mentoring online students. They offer information and opportunity to support onsite mentors in strengthening their practice and improving student outcomes in online courses.

State Continuing Education Clock Hours (SCECHs)
|
SCECHs are State Continuing Education Clock hours which are State Board approved inservice, workshop, training, or conference credits that are used for the renewal of selected certificates issued by the Michigan Department of Education.
There are two categories of SCECH programs: traditional and non-traditional. Traditional programs are face-to-face conferences, meetings, or workshops offering professional development focused on a specific topic or related topics. Non-traditional programs are professional development activities in which educators may participate such as school committees, new teacher mentor, K-12 school improvement teams, and more.
Are you offering a training, conference or workshop and would like your participants to receive SCECHs? Please fill out the
attached application and submit to MANS no less than 45 calendar days prior to the start date of the training. A final agenda must be submitted along with the application, and must contain the same title as the application, date(s) of the offering(s), and clearly defined times on the agenda for each topic.

Michigan Literacy Workshop - August 7, 2017 - Mount Pleasant, Michigan
|
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is partnering with Michigan Virtual and Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators (MAISA) to host a Literacy Workshop for building administrators, K - 4 and building teams. Teach to Lead Teacher Leadership Summit Idea Submission
|
The U.S. Department of Education is hosting a Teach to Lead Summit in Austin, Texas, September 22-14, 2017. The Summit brings teachers, leaders, and other stakeholders together to collaborate, problem solve, and develop action plans to benefit students and schools.
In order to participate in the Summit, schools must submit their team's teacher leadership ideas by August 9, 2017. Each team must contain one active teacher and total of 2-5 members. If your application is selected, recipients receive free registration, hotel accommodations if traveling longer than 50 miles, and some meals.
