What is a Tokyo Turnip?



The Tokyo Turnip is a variety of turnip that tastes like a cross between a turnip and a radish.These tender turnips have a mild, juicy flavor that is slightly spicy. Snow Hill Farm's turnips are grown from organic, non-GMO seed, and if you are committed to preventing food waste, these turnips can be eaten from root to stem! Unlike bigger varieties, these turnips are delicious raw and are sometimes called salad turnips. They are also called Japanese turnips, and were first cultivated in Japan in the 1950's, in response to a country-wide famine caused by World War II.  Turnips are a great source of vitamin C. Their leafy greens are even more nutritious and offer vitamins A, C, and K as well as folate and calcium.

Welcome, Babies!

There was a small baby boom on the farm in July. Our Berkshire sow, Petunia, welcomed six piglets and one of our mama Angus cows gave birth to a steer. 


Farewell to our Summer Interns! 

If you stopped by our tent this summer at John Jay Farm Market, you probably had the pleasure of meeting our wonderful summer interns, Tara Westington and Shannon Perrott. We will miss them as they head back to school in the fall! Tara is entering her senior year at King's  College in Pennsylvania where she is studying Environmental Studies and Political Economy.  Shannon is a junior at Stonehill College in Massachusetts, majoring in Environmental Science and minoring in Elementary Education.
