Escondido is an innovation hub. A number of businesses have their start here, but as they have grown, have moved to a neighboring city as industrial space is limited. Take, for example, Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap. They outgrew their location, tried to find a new home in Escondido, but ended up moving to Vista a few years ago. 

Keeping businesses in Escondido is the best way to build a strong economy. Just as it is easier to keep your current customers satisfied than trying to develop new ones, businesses are the same. As they grow, they employee more people who in turn support local commerce and are engaged in the community. 

So what is on the horizon for Escondido? How do we keep growing businesses here and attract new businesses?

Through development. Take a short drive around town. There is a lot of activity. From the former Toyota Truck Center at Broadway and Lincoln, to the new industrial park ground breaking on Harmony Grove.   The city of Escondido has a running report on all development activities at escondido.org

Housing has been a central topic for San Diego County, from lack of inventory to attainability. Housing availability has a direct impact on the local economy.

Thus, this month, the Government Affairs and Economic Development Committees will have a combined meeting on  Tuesday, Aug. 1 at 4:00 with special guest,   Rita Brandin, Senior V.P. and Development Director for Newland Communities.

Rita will give an update on the Newland Sierra project. Newland recently submitted the EIR and announced a very innovative community design that addresses future energy needs and open space. 

Ruth Hellams has been selected to serve as Interim Principal for Del Lago Academy - Campus of Applied Science by the Escondido Union High School District. She replaces Keith Nuthall who accepted an administrative position in the Los Angeles County.  Mrs. Hellams has over 15 years of educational leadership experience at the secondary level, along with extensive training and knowledge in the latest research and innovations in curriculum, instruction and assessment.
