Gubernatorial Candidates
Phil Murphy and Kim Guadagno
Announce Running Mates

As we approach the general election in November, the race for Governor has begun to heat up with Gubernatorial nominees Phil Murphy (D) and Kim Guadagno (R) announcing their selections for Lieutenant Governor. The Murphy campaign has announced that Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-34) will join Phil Murphy on the Democratic ticket, and there are reports that Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno has chosen Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo (R).

The position of Lieutenant Governor is the second highest ranking official in State government and is next in the order of succession in the event of a vacancy in the office of Governor resulting from the death, resignation or removal of the Governor in office. Here is a look at the candidates for Lieutenant Governor:

Democratic Nominee: Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver (D-34)
  • Born: July 14, 1952 in Newark, NJ; currently resides in East Orange, NJ.
  • Education: B.A. in Sociology from Lincoln University; M.S. in Urban Planning and Administration from Columbia University.
  • Experience: Member of the General Assembly 2004-Present representing the 34th Legislative District; Speaker of the General Assembly 2010-2014; Assistant County Administrator for Essex County 2001-Present; Democratic candidate for US Senate 2013; member of the East Orange Board of Education from 1994-2000 serving as Vice President from 1998-1999 and President from 1999-2000; Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders 1996-1999.
  • Legislative Committees: Currently serves on the Assembly Commerce and Economic Development Committee, Assembly Transportation and Independent Authorities Committee, Joint Committee on the Public Schools, and the Joint Committee on Economic Justice and Equal Employment Opportunity.
  • Special Accomplishments: Oliver is the first African-American woman to lead a legislative house in New Jersey, and just the second in American history.
Republican Nominee: Woodcliff Lake Mayor Carlos Rendo (R)
  • Born: 1964 in Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1966.
  • Education: B.A. in Political Science from Rutgers University; J.D. from Temple University School of Law.
  • Experience: Woodcliff Lake Mayor 2015-Present; Partner of the law firm Mulkay and Rendo; New Jersey Head of Marco Rubio for President; New Jersey City University Trustee; Woodcliff Lake Borough Council President 2014-2015; Planning Board Attorney for the Town of West New York from 1996-2008 and 2010-2012; served on Governor Christine Todd Whitman's Ethnic Advisory Council.
  • Special Accomplishments: First Latino to hold the position of Mayor in the Bergen County borough.
The decision to select Oliver, an Essex County Democrat, as his running mate may help energize the Democratic base in NJ. Guadagno's selection of Rendo, a relatively unknown to State politics, not only helps distance herself from Governor Christie's low approval ratings, but Rendo's connections to the Hispanic Community in Hudson County could aid the campaign in attracting voters that typically vote Democrat. As polls continue to analyze the Gubernatorial race, this news will likely have an impact for weeks to come.

KZG Helps "Strike-Out Hunger"

Last month, the KZG team was pleased to volunteer in United Way's "Strike-Out Hunger" event. KZG joined hundreds of volunteers to pack over 175,000 healthy meals for the Mercer Street Friends Food Bank which plays an important role in ensuring that the food bank is stocked throughout the summer months. In addition to the meals packed for the over 375,000 New Jersey children facing food insecurity, the event raised tens of thousands of dollars to help alleviate and eliminate this growing problem. KZG was proud to support this important and worthy cause!

Governor Christie Proclaims August 2017 Children's Vision & Learning Month

As the new school year approaches, children throughout New Jersey are gathering their school supplies. With pencils, erasers and notebooks in tow, children slowly ready themselves for another year of study. However, the final component often overlooked by parents and educators may be the most critical to a child's academic success -- an eye exam.

The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 19 million children are currently living with visual impairments. Of those, 12 million children are visually impaired due to refractive errors, a condition that could be easily diagnosed and corrected. Yet, according to the American Optometric Association, undetected vision problems are still a significant childhood handicap and could, in some circumstances where the child displays similar signs and symptoms, lead to children being mislabeled as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In fact, the American Public Health Association estimates that 25% of students in grades K-6 have visual problems that are serious enough to impede learning.

In recognition of this critical link between eye health and learning, the Kaufman Zita Group helped the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians (NJSOP) secure a Governor's Proclamation designating August 2017 Children's Vision and Learning Month in New Jersey.

This important proclamation recognizes the significance of proper eye care for children and underscores the critical link between eye health and learning. The proclamation also encourages parents and educators to address learning-related vision problems, helping ward off potential learning disabilities derived from visual impairment and, ultimately, enabling children to achieve their full potential.

KZG's Adam Kaufman Attends the International Council of Shopping Centers' 2017 Strategic Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C.

KZG Principal Adam Kaufman joined members of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), a KZG client, in the nation's capital last month for their 2017 Strategic Leadership Summit. ICSC is the global trade association of the shopping center industry, representing more than 70,000 members in over 100 countries, including 34 states in the U.S. ICSC members include shopping center owners, developers, managers, marketing specialists, investors, retailers, brokers, and others. ICSC's purpose is to advance the shopping center industry and to promote its role in the commercial distribution of consumer goods and services through research, education, and advocacy.

During their annual meeting, ICSC members from across the country descended on Washington to discuss key legislation impacting the retail real estate industry, meet with Congressional offices, and participate in legislative briefings by policy experts. In attendance at this year's event for a luncheon discussion on retail real estate issues was "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd and ICSC Chairman Kenneth Bernstein.

Adam provided ICSC members with an update on legislative activity in New Jersey and discussed relevant issues pertaining to the industry. Additionally, Adam utilized this opportunity to engage with Congressional representatives and their staffs about the challenges and opportunities the industry faces in New Jersey and across the United States.
