CAHEC Remembers
First Board Chair

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Eddie Mann, Jr., a former CAHEC Board member and long-time community advocate. Eddie's support and guidance over the years was unparalleled, serving as the Chair of the CAHEC Board of Directors from 1992-2002 and as a board member and then board advisor until 2009.

Dana Boole, CAHEC President, knows first-hand the impact Eddie has had on CAHEC. "Eddie was instrumental in the formation of CAHEC in 1992. His passion for our organization was second to none. He was my first CAHEC Board Chair, a mentor, and a friend. Long after his departure from the board, he would periodically drop me a note when he was proud of something he read in CAHEC Connections, the local news, or a property he may have driven by."

Much of CAHEC's success is a direct result of Eddie's dedication to our organization and he will be greatly missed by his CAHEC family.

CAHEC Foundation Sponsors Summer Feeding Programs

The CAHEC Foundation realizes many families rely on food assistance programs to provide nutritious meals to their children during the school year. During the summer, these programs are often put on hold until the next school year begins, which results in many children going hungry. To ensure youth residents have healthy meals year-round, the CAHEC Foundation partners with local organizations and food banks to connect residents to nutritious meals during a time when they need it the most.

This summer, the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina in Raleigh, NC; the Second Harvest Food Bank in Winston-Salem, NC; and the Feed More Food Bank in Richmond, VA; have all played a vital part in connecting our residents to on-site meals through their Summer Feeding Programs. The CAHEC Foundation was also proud to sponsor one week of meals for a summer camp hosted by the East Durham Children's Initiative (EDCI) in Durham, NC. Through these partnerships, the CAHEC Foundation can offer healthy meals to our residents during the summer. Thank you to all the organizations working so hard to help end summer hunger.

Our Mission in Action
  • CAHEC was honored to be on hand for the ground breaking of Tabor Landing, a 48-unit new construction community for working families located in Tabor Landing, NC. We can't wait to see how this development turns out.

  • This year, CAHEC received 27 application submissions for the Open Doors Homeownership Grant. Our team of grant readers is currently evaluating each application and will decide on three grant recipients by mid-October. Best of luck to all the applicants!

A Look Into the Affordable Housing Crisis

By: Kemper Baker, CAHEC Board Member

Reviewing recent government announcements and news stories, we might conclude that the economy is doing well and that prosperity has returned. We hear, for instance, that home prices have regained their pre-recession levels, and that the job market is robust. Although we might be able to make those cases, we would still be missing a great deal of the overall picture. Our stake in affordable housing warrants a closer examination of today's realities and how it relates to low-income residents in the housing industry.

Fortunately, both the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC) and the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University (JCHS) have recently released reports on the state of affordable housing. Unfortunately, neither story is encouraging. In fact, the title of the NLIHC report is revealing: The Gap: A Shortage of Affordable Housing. The report's focus is housing for extremely low-income households, and their situation is grim.  Not one of the 50 states have sufficient affordable housing for this group. The state with the best availability has but 61 units of housing for each 100 extremely low-income households.  The state with the poorest availability only has 15 units for each 100 households.

Youth Leadership Initiative Supports
Financial Literacy

For the past 24 years, the North Carolina Bankers Association (NCBA) Foundation has offered a summer camp experience, known as Camp Challenge , to high-achieving, low-resource students across North Carolina. This year, the CAHEC Foundation was proud to sponsor 20 students to attend Camp Challenge the week of July 9th. For one-week, middle school students participated in a variety of traditional camp activities like archery, ropes courses, kayaking, and swimming. They also spent part of their time in a financial literacy course exploring topics on career goals, potential income, and budgeting for the future.

For more information on this education initiative, please visit the Youth Leadership Initiative section of our website.
